PPI also provides content for those seeking INCOSE professional certification. Hi,Eclectic Intellect is simply the legal entity I use to bring my ideas and skills to the world. Originally founded in Wisconsin, the business is now located in Prescott Arizona. The name is both descriptive and aspirational - I love to draw upon many sources and viewpoints, then rationally combine them in new ways. I am passionate about unlocking potential, whether that's an idea, an organization, or an individual life. During my career I've found that ability to be the fundamental basis of disruptive innovation, the secret to effective project and program management, and the very essence of systems engineering. It has also served me well in photography, music, and many other aspects of life.So far I've helped launch a professional society that is now approaching 20,000 members, been Vice President at a really cool product design firm that completes hundreds of development projects per year, served as Systems Engineering Manager for a cubic-kilometer scale neutrino telescope now operating at the South Pole, and helped transform several large companies from box provider to market-leading system integrator. Before that I worked on the Strategic Defense Initiative, the Space Shuttle program, and an assortment of strategic missile and defense programs. I've helped well over 5,000 people worldwide gain expertise in the delicate balance of business leadership, program management and systems engineering skills required to bid, design and deliver complex systems. This role began when I planned, launched and managed a third business unit within bb7. The new unit was based on the premise that the company's cumulative knowledge of product development could itself become a valuable product, providing both direct revenue and sales enhancement for the other two units. Through mid-2015 I also served as a member of the bb7 Leadership Team, helping to guide the strategy, vision and operating design of the organization during a period of extraordinary growth and market success. I also contributed to individual project effort when knowledge of advanced systems engineering and project management methods were needed. Examples of key contributions in that role include concept development, engineering design, product and technology roadmaps, lessons learned capture, IP "room to play" exploration, and expert proposal strategy support.Working with a single technical writer / co-conspirator extraordinaire (thank you Michael Cline) this fledgling business unit created 96 course modules, 17 full courses, and 30 hours of continuing education content in less than two years. As a result, bb7 was able to offer clients a portfolio of knowledge-based analysis, consulting, and training services addressing key challenges faced by nearly every commercial product development organization. During 2015 my role evolved into that of "evangelist", taking the bb7 message of advanced development methods and integrated skills out to the marketplace. Activities included speaking engagements, courses, webinars, social media, building professional and academic networks, and direct sales support.My 2015 performance in that role was exceptional: Direct and Indirect Revenue: 145% over plan Bid Opportunities Generated: 1,051% over plan Market Impressions Created: 702% over plan Qualified Leads: 276% over plan Contacts: 710% over plan

In this position I was responsible for creating product / technical / business strategy to fit a very diverse range of internal and client needs. I also served as Senior Systems Engineer and Project Manager on a variety of efforts. Support was provided to clients in a number of industries including telecommunications, transportation, and consumer products. I derived an entire family of new products for one client simply by trend extrapolation and application of development patterns found in telecommunications and other networked industries. That vision revealed a billion dollar market opportunity within a "mature" industry segment. I provided product and technology road-maps to one client that would fundamentally alter cooking as it is known today. Yet another client needed project management methods tailored to precisely fit complex systems integration effort. In addition to guidance on process, a full week of training was developed and delivered worldwide to help implement those methods. The final innovation was to define a new growth area for bb7, which resulted in promotion to VP and responsibility to establish a new business unit on behalf of the company.

Helped clients address a diverse array of business, technical and operational needs. Specialty was improving the interface between sales, project management, engineering, and business oversight. Solutions included upgrades to project management infrastructure, proposal, change management, risk and many other key process upgrades. Helped craft major proposal strategy, led proposal teams, served as subject matter expert and review board member. Major clients included Tellabs, Motorola, Honeywell, and Qualcomm. Related skills development, including Instructional Design, Course Development, and Course Delivery worldwide. Co-developer, Subject Matter Expert, and Master Instructor for Motorola University’s highly regarded Systems Integration Institute. Have personally taught over 4,000 people the essence of excellence on large developmental projects. Took a short hiatus to support a full time role as System Engineering Manager on the UW IceCube Neutrino Telescope project.

Responsible for the overall design and performance of a "discovery-class" major research instrument called IceCube. Established a tailored System Engineering process, including Requirements Documentation, Test Procedures, Design Reviews and status monitoring tools appropriate for a large ($250 million) academically led project. Provided detailed design support for critical path technology areas, emphasizing life cycle optimization and reliability as well as scientific performance. Prepared trade studies, performance budgets and margins, established project technical documentation standards, Engineering Requirements Documents, System Description Document, Test and Commissioning plans, EMI risk assessment and mitigation strategies. Managed a team of engineers working in various reliability and design support roles. Designed and implemented a high fidelity hardware / software in the loop System Development Test Lab. Worked with software and hardware design teams to establish test lab configuration, coordinate access, and assist in interpretation of results. Key member of the Failure Review Board, working closely with Quality and Manufacturing to logically analyze all variance for root cause and resolution strategy. Prepared Cost, Schedule and Technical Plans, Forecasts, Time Phased Budgets, Earned Value and other Project Management metrics.Note: I reported directly to the UW PM and Principal Investigator, however my services were technically provided on a contract basis through Triad Project Management.

Managed a team of approximately 125 professionals engaged in Engineering Design and Support roles, including Reliability, Human Factors, Configuration Management, Technical Documentation, and User Training activities. Responsible for project assignment, functional skills development and retention, performance assessment and hiring / firing decisions.Key projects included the US Army Joint STARS Ground Station Module (GSM), as well as several major ($100 Million and up) proposal efforts.

Small ICBM Project (Denver)Responsible for maintenance and sparing strategies, design of support and test equipment, and evaluation of performance against established requirements. Developed thousands of pages of system support documentation, including detailed functional flow bock diagrams, N-squared interface control documentation, and comprehensive mode / state transition matrices. Position also involved support for multiple large proposal efforts, including the multi-Billion dollar Small ICBM System Integration contract. Led 8 weeks of System Level Design Reviews that involved competing bidders as well as senior Air Force Customer representatives.Managed a team of 15-20 engineers, provided professional development and career guidance as well as technical skills training, made hiring, task assignment, performance measurement, and promotion decisions for the team.National Test Bed Project (Colorado Springs)Provided software integration, development, test, and operational support for all sparing, maintenance, reliability and availability related simulation capabilities. These high fidelity, faster than real time capable, full physics of battle wargame simulation models were elements of the National Test Bed, a massive supercomputing resource designed to be the hardware/software in the loop development center for the entire Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) system, and later absorbed into the current Ballistic Missile Defense Organization.Worked briefly with IBM Research Fellows Dr. Watts Humphrey and Dr. Harlan Mills on parallel processing implementation and establishment of “clean room” software design methods. Also worked briefly with Dr. Edward Teller to define space battle concepts and critical physics / reliability impact parameters.

Responsible for the Space Shuttle Ground Support System maintenance databases, including logistics and spares requirements. Provided Quality Control for every requirement related to facilities, spares, maintenance, tools and test equipment associated with the VAFB launch site. Worked with NASA engineers at Kennedy Space Center, Houston, and Huntsville to establish common support processes throughout the Shuttle Program.Established software requirements and co-designed relational database tools associated with this effort, provided remote site IT support and user training.

Analyzed design concepts, developed maintenance, sparing and support requirements, prepared periodic and corrective maintenance procedures, and developed overall support plan for the MX (later named “Peacekeeper”) Strategic Missile system.Developed software tools used to document maintenance requirements, established Monte Carlo based reliability and availability models, and validated system level Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Mean Time To Repair (MTTR), and fault location time / resolution performance measures.

I was responsible for designing parametric cost / performance trade study tools, establishing relevant estimating factors and relationships, and executing those models in support of advanced development effort. The most sophisticated of these models was over 50,000 lines of code and provided complex response surface views of the trade-off relationships among any set of design variables. In addition to designing the tools, I also created the validation process and reference values needed to establish confidence in the results.I performed Cost analysis, prepared Value Engineering Change Proposals, and created documentation for System Requirements Reviews, Preliminary Design Reviews, and Critical Design Review events. During this period I was a pooled resource and assigned to a number of ongoing "skunkworks" design efforts. Major projects included the Advanced Strategic Air Launched Missile (ASALM), Harpoon Cruise Missile derivatives, particularly with Anti-Sub Warfare (ASW) missions, and the landmark Supersonic Long Range Missile Integration Study (SLRMIS) which explored such exotic concepts as integral rocket scramjets, lifting body designs, and speeds in excess of Mach 6.A key aspect of this position was the people I worked with. The Apollo-era design mentoring I received was an incredible gift early in a career.
