I am a hands-on design leader with a broad, varied skill set. I’ve been called everything from a UX Lead to Design Strategist to Creative Director. I help shape design and product strategy, typically working closely with a company's C-suite or leadership team. Sometimes I work to build and lead teams. Most of all, I use design and research to create products people want to use. Led product design of Petabyte's pet parent-facing iOS and Android apps. I conducted interviews with pet parents and vets to their needs and pain points. Research informed the app's design and features. The app allows pet parents to easily access their pet's medical records, request medication and refills, keep track of vaccinations and schedule appointments.

A short, fun project! I presented a design strategy and explorations for Flo who were interested in exploring ways to increase customer engagement through design.

Led design and research at Topology, an eyewear startup that creates glasses precision-fit to your face, taking them from a rough ‘pre-MVP’ product to a human-centered iOS app. My early research uncovered critical trust issues and deeply informed the company’s roadmap, from major changes to the app’s design to integrating Live Chat and a physical prototype try-on into the purchase flow.

I took Varo from an investor deck through to their App Store launch. Work included running a Google Design Sprint with C-level stakeholders, participatory design sessions with our users, hiring and managing a small team, and leading product design in a fast-paced and resource-constrained environment.I returned to Varo in 2019 in a consulting capacity to lead the UX design of Varo's new web application.

I worked with Motif to completely rethink and redesign their native apps. I mapped the end-to-end customer experience, identifying key user types and solved for difficult edge cases. I iterated with wireframes, prototypes, and lightweight user testing to create designs that improve information density, engagement and joy.

Led user research sessions with Google Adwords moderators. These sessions informed detailed design recommendations and preliminary designs for a new workflow and set of tools.

I worked as a design consultant for nine years in London, leading UX efforts for (mostly) large corporations launching new digital products or significantly redesigning existing ones. Highlights are detailed below.

Redesigned Betfair’s highly transactional iPhone app and mobile web apps, significantly increasing the volume of bets placed via mobile. These designs improved users’ access to different markets and streamlined the place a bet process.

Redesigned navigation across the mobile iPhone-optimized iPlayer to support better mobile behaviors and constraints. Immediately available content was made more visible; bookmarking and browsing features were adapted to better support ‘save it for tonight’ browsing behavior.

Led the design of a cross-platform personalized video news service at a start-up. I defined the design strategy and context-centric approach, running workshops with board-level stakeholders to gather requirements. I managed a highly iterative prototyping process to demonstrate and iterate design concepts early on. Developed budget and hiring plan; responsible for design and front-end technical hires.

Managed the integration of third party apps including Facebook and Skype into the native UI of the 3 Skypephone S2 and INQ1 phones, providing users with a single, integrated experience. The INQ1 won Best Mobile Handset at the GSMA 2009 Mobile World Congress.

Responsible for the design strategy and nuts-and-bolts details of a ‘blue sky’ proposal presented to Samsung HQ for a new, simpler European mobile platform that would integrate siloed content areas, exploit mobile-optimized search and use tags to organize content.

Led UX strand of concept development work on all of Nokia’s Live category phones. Responsible for the UX work done to layer ‘finger touch’ onto the 5800 XPressMusic, Nokia‘s first full-touch (stylus) phone. Worked closely with internal ergonomics and R&D teams to turn initial concepts into reality.

Developed a new mobile phone framework for Motorola’s low-end devices. Designed use cases and screentypes supporting the framework’s core principles. Designs prioritized essential user goals and ease of use, providing wizard-style paths and screens that dispensed with Options menus.

Completely redesigned the BBC’s moderation system, a web app used to review thousands of pieces of user-submitted content every day. Ran contextual interviews that significantly informed design choices. The streamlined redesign significantly reduced moderation costs.After this project, I was re-engaged by the BBC several times.
