This was an amazing opportunity where I worked on a wide range of processes that affected patient outcomes. For example: I worked on projects that - Improved patient clinical outcomes for cardiovascular patient groups- Launched new service-lines such as Pulmonary Rehab- Reduced grease in food cafeterias and developed a process to deliver food on-demand- Increased emergency-room throughput (This last project was JCAHO commended project.)I had hands-on training about how/what/why a complex (perhaps most complex) service-delivery system works. To me, healthcare delivery is a workplace, where on average, the sense of mission among employees (self-selected or nurtured-in) is far more than employees who work elsewhere.Hence, I recommend to all: If you really want to become a leader and want to learn how to navigate "complexity" while valuing individual mission, then work in a healthcare setting for some period of time. It is the best experiential training to become a leader.
