Brief presentationI have always been dedicated to research and clinical-surgical practice. I have performed over 5000 surgical procedures and written over 50 scientific papers including peer reviewed articles, reviews, chapters in books and conference acts. I have actively participated as a moderator/speaker/expert in more than 100 international and national congresses and received 13 awards from some of the most important Italian ophthalmological societies. My main surgical specialization is ocular reconstruction after eye trauma, vitreoretinal surgery and treatment of postoperative complications of cataract surgery. My research activity focuses on the development of surgical techniques and on the effectiveness and safety of novel devices/prostheses and surgical instruments. Constant updating allowed me to acquire the skills for using modern diagnostic techniques and to apply them for studying the natural history and postoperative evolution of retinal disorders. Collaboration with specialists of different disciplines like radiology, microbiology, optical microscopy, and engineering, has led me to develop new study methods applicable to ophthalmology (using MRI for studying pathologic myopic eyes, immunohistochemical examination and microscopic observation for studying retinal proliferative membranes). Thanks to cooperation with statisticians, I developed solid skills in using statistical methods for systematic reviewing of literature, for prospective and retrospective studies and for evaluating the intra- and interobserver validation of scientific staging-systems and classifications.
Listed skills include Clinical Research, Cataract Surgery, Glaucoma Surgery, Vitreoretinal Surgery, and 10 others.
