Kalajoki

Project assistant in Flying Squirrel LIFE. Aims of the project are to develop and introduce new procedures and tools that take flying squirrel into account in land use planning and improve squirrel's currently fragmented habitat network.

Kalajoki Marine Nature Center

Main tasks were maintaining the nature centre exhibition, guidings for different kind of groups, customer service of outdoor destinations of the area and Bothian Bay Nationalpark. In addition social media and luontoon.fi/nationalpark.fi communication.Kalajoki Marine Nature centre was closed in 2022.

Savitaipale

Peat and mire inventory that included defining mire type, peat composition and decay stage. I also observed valuable biotopes and species and together with vegetation and tree cover assessed the ecological stage and value of the ecosystem. The work was mostly field work and required navigation skills and physical endurance.

I was a part of Oulukaverit-team, that presents University of Oulu and its degree programmes. I visited several high schools and study affairs and told about our biology degree, study possibilities and student life in Oulu.

I substituted three courses of biology (life & evolution, cell & heritability and environment ecology) and one in geography (world in change). I included variedly ia. experiments, discussion and games in teaching.

During 2-week field work in Elimyssalo (Kuhmo) I became familiar with methods of seedling inventory, vegetation square, dendrometer and deadwood measurements. This field work was part of restoration monitoring. I was also introduced to biomass collection. Most of the time I worked in LIFE PeatLandUse -project (project info linked below). I worked with MaxEnt and ArcGIS modelling distributions of endangered mire species in the aapa mire belt in Finland.

Our group of biology and geography teacher students planned and organized a pilot project of science camp for 8th and 9th grade students. It took place in Oulanka National Park and we covered themes of sustainable tourism, physical geography characters of Oulanka area and scientific study. Ilmajoki, Finland

The duties included electric and net fishing as well as crayfishing as part of the environmental monitoring of various companies and plants. I also managed field data and saved it in the national database. Additionally I worked with dust survey, water sampling and monitoring of wastewater treatment plants.

Freiburg, Germany

I worked most of the time in the project Integrate+, whose mission is to integrate biodiversity conservation and forest management. I did field work with establishing demonstration sites and defining ecological values based on microhabitats. Big part was also data acquisition and editing for software learning material that is used for demonstration and virtual logging plan. Furthermore I participated several meetings where we promoted the project and took care of public relations.

I was a student tutor for international exchange students in spring term 2014 and in autumn 2012 I tutored finnish biology freshmen. I learnt a lot about communication, group leading and organizing meetings.

Ilmajoki, Finland

I did spawning location survey of swamp frog and occurrence survey of spider species Aculepeira ceropegia as part of peat industry licence application. I handled invertebrates of bottom samples from rivers and lakes and also did some laboratory work in preparing water samples. Finally I broke down surveys concerning conditions of different waterways.
