I am an award-winning author and public historian based in New Jersey. My first book, HAPPY DREAMS OF LIBERTY: AN AMERICAN FAMILY IN SLAVERY AND FREEDOM (Oxford University Press), was awarded the 2023 Frederick Douglass Book Prize from Yale University's Gilder Lehrman Center and the 2023 Tom Watson Brown Book Award from the Society of Civil War Historians, among other awards and honors. I am committed to sharing historical research with broad and diverse audiences through my writing, museum exhibitions, and other public history projects.
