Profile bio

About Risa Hoffman

I was proud to celebrate my 10th anniversary at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in June of 2023. I feel privileged to work at an extraordinary, internationally recognized healthcare organization that prioritizes diversity, inclusion and language access. The Language Services Department is my home away from home. I started my journey at HSS as a Spanish interpreter and found myself in the company of talented, caring colleagues from day one. Under the management of a passionate director, I thrived in my new role as I explored the array of departments and specialties at HSS, in both private office and clinic settings, assisting both adult and pediatric patients. My Hunter College training, a 160 hour certificate in medical and legal interpretation and translation, served me in good stead in my new position. Over the course of my first year at HSS, the number of domestic and international LEP patients grew exponentially. In 2014 my role was expanded from part-time to full-time as the demand increased, and I eagerly embraced the new opportunity. I began the process of studying for national certification (CMI), which I achieved in 2016. Starting in 2015 I supervised departmental volunteers and in 2016, I began to recruit and manage staff interpreters. From 2016 until 2021, management became a central part of my role, and I served as Assistant Director of the department starting in 2018. Throughout these years, I continued to interpret and translate, and I derived tremendous satisfaction from that work. I also discovered a true passion for supporting and motivating the interpreters and volunteers on my team. I love to mentor thoughtful, talented individuals in order to help them reach their full potential. In the beginning of 2022, my family relocated to St. Louis for my husband’s work. Since I graduated with a B.A. in Spanish from Washington University in 2002, it has been a pleasure to return to St. Louis and create a new home for my family here. Upon relocation, I stepped down as Assistant Director and transitioned into the remote position of Operations Assistant/Spanish Interpreter. I support the efforts of the Associate Director and collaborate with the whole team in order to achieve seamless staff scheduling and the assignment of the appropriate interpretation modality to each patient for each encounter. I also interpret for Telehealth visits and patient education webinars. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to continue at HSS in a remote capacity.

Listed skills include Interpreting, Translation, Tutoring, Theatre, and 1 others.
