Iron fortification of food products has been an important focus for a lot of FMCG players, given the high prevalence of anaemia in the country. However, iron presents a unique challenge. Soluble iron (Fe2+) is reactive and tends to change the taste,texture, smell and appearance of food products, while insoluble iron (Fe3+), though unreactive, is not absorbed by the body. My project at GSK was to identify what components of Horlicks react with the soluble iron. Turns out, polyphenols in malted barley, which is the primary ingredient of Horlicks, were the culprit. I designed a series of experiments to prove this conclusively.

Diabetes Mellitus is a rapidly growing lifestyle disease amongst pets, just as with humans. Boehringer is the world leader in development of veterinary medicine for treatment of Diabetes in pets. I worked at their headquarters in Germany, on one of their best-selling Diabetes drug, ProZinc®.My project was to develop an alternative manufacturing process for ProZinc, to replace the existing two-step process, thereby increasing productivity by 2x. We succeeded in developing a single stage process at a lab scale and transferred it to scale-up. The Company decided to file a patent for the process.
