For 26 years, I’ve been at the forefront of DEI, starting with the founding of Oklahoma’s first full-service DEI firm. I’ve witnessed the industry shift from indifference to hesitant acceptance, to a hot trend in HR, and now, to a polarizing topic clouded by fear and scarcity. DEI shouldn't be hard. It's literally humanity in its purest form. Kindness, compassion, empathy, fairness, respect… you know, the stuff we learned when we were five years old.I also created Oklahoma’s first state-wide DEI initiative in partnership with former Governor Brad Henry, and I’ve had the privilege of speaking for and consulting with powerhouse organizations like T-Mobile, AT&T, Bayer, Procter & Gamble, Harvard University, Google, NASA, YouTube and many more across the world.Then I messed around and wrote a best-selling book, Be Better Than Your BS: How Radical Acceptance Empowers Authenticity and Creates a Workplace Culture of Inclusion. It hit #2 on the Wall Street Journal and #15 on USA Today. I’m still in awe of crushing that goal!Before I was Risha Grant, international speaker and bestselling author, I was a baller who shot my way to a Division One basketball full scholarship offer. Injuries ended that lifelong dream, but the teamwork and culture I learned on the court shaped everything I do today. Whether in sports or business, watching a team come together and crush goals never gets boring.So, what have I learned in 26 years of working with people and culture? We need to be better than our BS! And there is a lot of BS in life that stops us from reaching our full potential. We need to #BeBetter—kinder, empathetic, and accepting—while actively creating the lives we desire.Right now, the term DEI has sparked a lot of fear. People are worried about reverse discrimination and clinging to a scarcity mindset. Remember, DEI is just a term, treating people unjustly is the issue. If we focus on being better humans there wouldn’t be a need for DEI.DEI is no longer my focus. My mission is to help create a world where initiatives like these aren’t needed. It’s time for companies to move beyond being "DEI focused" to being "DEI infused." I’m expanding my approach beyond DEI to a holistic strategy for transforming organizational culture.
