Backstop started as a cybersecurity product focused on startups, and evolved to be a consulting company focused on security assessments, CISO/CSO as a service, and DevOps/DevSecOps modernization.Through Google Cloud, I've worked with companies with billions of dollars of revenue, moving from on-premise systems to GCP, while modernizing everything from the infrastructure, to containers and Kubernetes, to the end-customer applications. I came into a organization (based in LATAM) with product facing teams that were doing good work, but are struggling to maintain velocity in the face of changing business needs, supporting existing revenue, and building for the future. Everyone was working towards their own goals, but there was a struggle to make sure everyone's goals aligned across the company. The first thing I did was make the entire roadmap (product features, technical debt, bugs and support) visible to all stakeholders, and put metrics/expected ROI on each chunk of work. Established cross-business reviews of all the work being done (and planned to be done) for product engineering so that prioritization discussions happen with a focus on business need.Defined clear expectations for managers, and planned career growth and promotions within product engineering.Continued learning Spanish to communicate better and to build rapport with the team in LATAM.There's a lot more to talk about, ask me questions!

I turned a collection of great individuals into an award winning, high performing platform engineering team that powers thousands of businesses and billions of dollars of transactions. Led ~ 70 people all around the world.When I took over, the infrastructure team was about 40 people, with no specific operational (or management) structure in place. People were overworked and burning out, software releases had lots of issues, and work was incredibly siloed. There were only a few people who knew how the whole system worked, and the company was beholden to them to keep things moving. I rebranded as Platform Engineering, and increased velocity by building out a structure that created independent teams focused on SRE, DevOps, Security, Shared Services, Databases, and Network/Cloud Infrastructure. I used the increased velocity to prioritize work that resulted in a sharp reduction in customer facing outages, improved security and PCI compliance, and enabled us to take a much larger number of transactions which drove revenue and put us on a path to decrease costs. Won an award from Google Cloud for Documentation. Changing culture means changing habits, and the habit of building quality documentation means Clover can now onboard new engineers easily and respond to issues faster while eliminating single points of failure that existed.There's a lot more to talk about, ask me questions!

Parkifi is real-time, spot level data that helps parking operators manage and optimize their business. Our low-cost sensor (1/3 the price of competitors) and our custom, cloud enhanced detection enables our customers to deploy us across their portfolio.We started the company in February 2014, went through the Boomtown accelerator, raised our seed round, and completed a $7.5 million dollar Series A round. What we've done at Parkifi wouldn't have been possible without our awesome team members working together. I believe the key to creating high-performance teams is ensuring that people have the support they need, including mentorship, flexibility, learning opportunities, and space for personal and professional growth.As the technical co-founder of Parkifi, I've managed the ground up development of our IoT platform from prototype to production. This includes outsourcing design, building out an internal hardware team, managing production of sensors at CM's locally and overseas, and handling QA issues. On the software side, I've been responsible for hiring our software and infrastructure teams, building out a cogent and flexible architecture, designing our unique sensor-cloud hybrid detection system, and ensuring that our platform is extensible and scalable.

I was fortunate enough to be part of a fantastic team turning around the engineering organization. A lot of the groundwork work was created to allow the org to scale beyond the startup roots to solve the business needs now and in the future. This included creating an environment which increased employee retention, and enabled us to solve the technical challenges ahead. Among the many things accomplished were:Creating a career path which gave engineers and managers a clear direction to grow/move up in the company. Creating an architecture group to help clean up tech debt, and to empower engineers to make decisions on how to build out our stack.Added structure around our review and release process to prevent mistakes from causing outagesChanged the way we dealt with outages to ensure widespread knowledge dissemination, and to provide a focal point for reducing the number and frequency.Set up hiring plans and criteria, and trained engineers on good interviewing skills and practices.Worked with all stakeholders (Sales, Ops, Account Managment, Senior Execs) to validate what we were building was correct, and that the whole company was aligned on what was being delivered, and when.
