As a founding faculty member at the first School of Global Health based at a HBCU, I teach a seminar course on social and structural determinants of health equity for the School’s inaugural class of PhD and Master’s students. Meharry Medical College, founded in 1876, was the first medical school in the South for African Americans and has a rich history rooted in providing educational opportunities in the health sciences. In 2023, Meharry's Board of Trustees approved the creation of the first School of Global Public Health at a HBCU, furthering the College’s commitment to advancing health equity for minoritized and marginalized communities worldwide.

I launched and ran the first VA Homeless Patient Aligned Care Team (HPACT) in Los Angeles, designed to improve care and outcomes for high-need homeless Veterans. After demonstrating dramatic improvements in care and reductions in emergency department visits and hospital admissions, I subsequently managed the clinical expansion of the program, helping to establish and lead six additional primary care teams, an 80,000 sq.ft one-stop shop for health and human services, and a robust community engagement strategy, including a local and national medical-legal partnership strategy for homeless Veterans. The care model we established was formally recognized as “the highest quality and most compassionate care I have ever witnessed” by Dr. Thomas Bodenheimer, Emeritus Professor and founding Director of Center for Excellence in Primary Care, UCSF.
