My professional career started in 1979 at the National Board of Waters and the Environment. My tasks related to hydrology and process development. During that period I also acted a few years as the secretary of the Water Association, Finland.In 1995 I moved over the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, to the Unit of Natural Resources. My main task was to compile the strategy for the sustainable use of natural resources for the Ministry. In 1997, I was appointed the Head of the Unit. In 1999, I moved over the Unit of Water Resources, where my main fields of interest were water protection, flood risk management, international affairs, and steering of regional administration in the field of water resources management.From the beginning of 2004, I was appointed the Director of the Environment Centre of Southwest Finland, located at Turku. At the reform of regional administration in 2010 the Environment Centres became part of the new Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. Since then I acted as the Director of the Environment and Natural Resources Division at the Centre. The Division comprised of 90-100 experts on the field of environment protection, nature conservation, land use and building, water resources management and state of the environment. Earlier for a 10 months period (2013-2014) and then from April 2018 to the end of 2019 I acted also as the Director General of the Centre, the total personnel being c. 270 experts.I carried out the military service from 1981 to 1982. In the Reserve Officer School, I was a member of the Students’ Board. My military rank in reserve is Major.My personal interests include photography, history, hiking, fishing and hunting. I also played volley ball over 30 years. From the beginning of 2020, due to retirement, my time fills up with maintenance and repair of our home (a tiny farm), gardening, bee keeping, walking three border collies and raising a few lambs. There are three horses in our stable, and some chickens as well. If I´d have any spare time, I might use it by doing some consultancy through my newly founded one-man-firm.
