The internship was executed at the Ribatejo Thermoelectric Power Station, focused on the treatment of water used in the main cooling circuit. This internship was done for my Master's thesis of the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering course.Initially, the main problem was with the corrosion of the structures of the cooling towers caused by using sodium hypochlorite as a biocide and hydrochloric acid as a pH regulator. Due to its corrosive characteristics, efforts have been made to promote the use of an equally effective disinfecting agent, but without the associated harmful effects.Thus, the main focus of the internship was the study of the effect of the suggested alternative biocide, carbon dioxide, on the corrosion of equipment and structures as well as microbial growth. The costs associated with the use of biocide and maintenance of the plant's infrastructure were also taken into account. The end of this dissertation is based on the decision of implementing the suggested biocide or maintaining the disinfectant agent already used.

This curricular internship was carried out at LEF, located in Bacarena, Portugal.This internship provided me with a better understanding of laboratory techniques and the clinical trials required before the commercial use phase, thus increasing my knowledge in the field of laboratory chemistry. In addition, I had the opportunity to learn how HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) works, a method of separating chemical components present in a solution, which is used in analytical chemistry to identify and quantify each component in a mixture.Regarding soft skills, I was able to improve my sense of responsibility, communication, adaptability and teamwork.
