In this project I will take advantage of human iPSC, diabetes cell models, mouse models, pharmacological approaches and human specimens to determine the molecular mechanisms that contribute to the development of autoimmune diabetes and to explore novel approaches for combating type 1 diabetes.

In this project I validated new nanobodies for beta-cell imaging (PET and SPECT-CT) and validate them in humanized mouse models of beta cell transplantation, to allow the follow-up and quantification of beta cell loss in vivo. I have identified new potential beta cell biomarkers that are specific to beta cells with no or low expression in other human tissues.
