Extended nursing care in this special needs and hospice facility for children who are both medically disabled and orphaned. Cared for 18–144 children from newborn to age 4, sometimes with other care givers and sometimes alone. All children were medically very high risk or deemed incompatible with life in a standard orphanage. Gave medication, wound care, and post-surgery assessment and care to children with a wide variety of serious conditions. Comforted and held the children during their final moments. Played games and encouraged learning with the patients, giving them as much normalcy as possible. Trained local, non-medical volunteers on basic child care including diaper and dressing changes. • On duty 24/7, sometimes being the sole medical provider at a remote location with multiple special needs children. • Accompanied children out of the country as their sole guardian when they needed to undergo medical surgeries and treatments unavailable at the facility.
