About Ritu Singh
I am a rare hybrid species situated at the nexus of both science and communication. I have over twenty years experience in consumer facing publicity and through diligence and tenacity I retrained and successfully re-positioned my work-life, adapting my skills to achieve long-held goals in marine conservation science. Therefore I am uniquely positioned to communicate often complicated scientific concepts, clearly and succinctly to wide audiences using a varied multi-media toolkit. My first undergraduate degree in Cultural and Media Studies launched my career as a music industry publicist. I hold innate and polished experience for communicating concepts and ideas to consumers. I am very much a team player and as director of my own music PR firm I have on the ground experience of devising campaign strategies, people and business management, working to tight media deadlines, within hierarchies, and accountability to broad range of stakeholders. With an inquiring mind and love of learning I had a deep seated desire to affect change and returned to education to re-qualify in marine science. The majority of my academic work has been centred around genetic and taxonomic research of marine invertebrates. The dissertation for my second undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences reviewed co-evolution as represented by the symbiotic relationship of Hawaiian bobtail squid and bioluminescent Vibrio fischeri bacteria, focusing on the gene expression and trait adaptation allowing for the first stage of symbiont acquisition. My drive to continue research in this field led to an MSc at Imperial College London in Taxonomy, Biodiversity & Evolution with my final thesis being a community ecology survey of marine invertebrates at a shallow-water hydrothermal vent in Iceland. During my studies I volunteered both as Reptile Wildlife Monitor, Hampstead Heath (carrying out fieldwork aiding the understanding of the ecology of this unusual ecosystem) and at the Natural History Museum London in both the Mammals, and Mollusca sections. My current role as science communicator and content producer in sustainable fisheries allows me to focus my expansive professional and academic experience towards what I believe is humanity's most important endeavour: the practical conservation of the marine environment through sustainable fisheries management.
