Corporate Downtown is not a name that conjures up thoughts of mouthwatering food. It sounds more like an office complex.But the name reflects the crowd that owner R.J. Van Almen is aiming to attract at his bar-restaurant at 401 Cherry Ave. NE, formerly Pete’s Grill.The owner of beverage drive-thru’s in Lake and Jackson Township, and concession stands for fairs and festivals, he’s had his eye on the venue for awhile.The menu offers sandwiches, personal pizzas and entree salads in the $5.99 to $7.99 range.On my couple of weekday lunchtime visits, the place was bright with daylight, the service was friendly and attentive, and the food was visually appealing and palate-pleasing. I’ll definitely be back.The Reuben sandwich ($6.99) was one of the best I’ve had anywhere, with perfectly grilled rye bread, an ample stack of tender corned beef, melted Swiss cheese and sauerkraut, with Thousand Island on the side, accompanied by tortilla chips.Fans of Cobb salads ($8.99) won’t be disappointed by the Corporate Downtown version. Generous in size, its mixed greens are piled with sliced avocado, hard-boiled egg, crumbled bacon and blue cheese, tomato, cucumber, red onion and a sliced grilled boneless chicken breast. The homemade Grecian salad dressing is recommended.One of the most popular menu items, according to our server, is the broiled scrod dinner ($9.99). The six-ounce serving of mild fish broiled in lemon butter and topped with parmesan was perfectly prepared and flavorful rice pilaf a nice light side; fries, baked potato and pasta are other options. A dinner salad rounds out the entree.The blue burger ($7.99) is a third-pound grilled Angus patty topped with broiler-melted blue cheese on a fresh Kaiser bun, served with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and a side of fries.Other menu items include two steak dinners, wrap sandwiches, personal pizzas with an array of available toppings, a kid’s menu, and a hot-fudge sundae. There are also daily specials.
