Profile bio

About René J.V. Bertin

I am a researcher turned engineer of Dutch origin, with training and experience in theoretical biology ("Artificial Life") and perceptual psycho-physics, that is, perceptual neurosciences or, more generically speaking, Human Factors.I have long worked in contexts related to the biomedical sciences, where my studies addressed the multisensory interactions in the perception of self-motion as well as kinetoses ("simulator sickness", "cybersickness", also known as visually induced motion sickness). This experience allowed me subsequently to work in the conception, development and exploitation of driving simulators at the IFSTTAR (formerly INRETS) research institution, among others on projects at the Bordeaux Universitary Hospital Centre (CHU) as well as on the conception of a superb new simulation hall on the INRETS site at Satory near Versailles. What I like in my work is the autonomy and creativity combined with the standing on the shoulders of giants as well as the "occasional" deviation from the beaten paths. Conceiving and developing methods and tools for data production and analysis is one of my passions, especially if those tools or methods serve to generate new knowledge (or applications) or enrich existing ones — even more so if there are links with my centres of interest (like biology or health applications). The last few years I have also developed a keen interest in road safety issues, notably related to vulnerable users, in large part due to my work at the IFSTTAR and my own motorcycling activity.I've evolved naturally to an engineering profile as I found that I'm just as interested in the tools as in the questions for which they're required. In the end, I don't distinguish between an artificial complex system with a behaviour to generate/control, and a biological complex system the behaviour of which one wants to understand.

Listed skills include Matlab, Science, Simulations, C, and 37 others.

Research Engineer In Driving Simulation

Paris, France

Responsible for research on simulator sickness and the initial tuning of two prototype mobile-base ArchiSim2 simulators: a rotation+translation platform and a motorcycle simulator. Studied the human perception of combined physical and visually simulated yaw rotation. Design of a behavioural vehicle model for the motorcycle simulator using Matlab/Simulink. Overseeing of the instrumentation of the motorcycles to be used in rider studies; evolutionary maintenance of the software for analysing the resulting data and development of a tool for exploring the videos recorded with those bikes (partial reverse-engineering of a proprietary video format). Software and hardware integration of new tools with the ArchiSim2 simulators and software development allowing them to be controlled in realtime over USB/CAN directly from Matlab/Simulink (including modifications of microcontroller firmware). Scenario writing for driving simulation experiments following protocols defined by INRETS researchers. In charge of piloting the design and installation procedures for the visual systems of two new simulation halls to be equipped with wide-field composite visuals consisting of multiple large-screen retro-projection modules allowing easy reconfiguration.

Research Associate And Research Engineer

Paris

Researcher and research engineer in the LPPA laboratory, on several European projects:Project 'BioStim' : research engineer in support of the group "Oculomotor control in the monkey". Maintenance and development of software for data analysis and visual stimulation.Projet 'EUROKINESIS' : research associate in charge of 1) a study on the age-related changes in visuomotor strategies used in car driving and 2) a study on simulator sickness and the identification of possible remedies. This latter study was done in a collaboration I set up with the INRETS (driving simulation), Lyon 1 University (human autonomous nervous system recording) and several ENE physicians (evaluation of the importance of vestibular function in simulator sickness). Conception and development of the required methods and software to analyse the recorded data.

Post-Doctoral Marie-Curie Fellow

Paris

Studying visuo-vestibular interactions in the perception of self-motion and passively travelled trajectories.
