I worked on evaluating the security of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) or Operational Technology (OT) systems, which are one of the key foundations of many critical infrastructures such power, oil and gas, transportation and manufacturing. Having worked on varied OT protocols, the Distributed Network Protocol version 3 (DNP3) was my major. DNP3 is the de-facto SCADA protocol for electric grids. This protocol was of interest because it was one of the few protocols that attempted to provide a security mechanism to ensure that messages transmitted between devices were adequately secured from rogue applications. My work on these protocols allowed me to apply formal methods from theoretical computer science to formally analyse the correctness of protocol suites. I used formalisms such as Coloured Petri Nets to capture specification, design, model, validate and verify various security properties in the protocols. The outcomes of my research work are published in refereed conference and high impact journals transaction in the area of information security.
