While searching for patterns in data, one should not underestimate the impact of noise. What we observe as a pattern may in fact be pure randomness. A good actuary helps to distinguish between these phenomena.Over the past years I’ve worked in different areas of the non-life insurance industry, both in pricing and reserving. I enjoy turning data into information, and information into solutions. No matter what the problem is, I can contribute to the solution by understanding and quantifying the risks involved, turning complex matters into easy to understand concepts, and developing the tools required to make informed business decisions.But it’s more than just the job itself that drives me. I believe insurance plays a crucial role in society by bearing risks that are beyond a company’s or individual’s own resources. This gives them the opportunity to pursue their dreams and goals responsibly. Insurance thereby functions as a form of solidarity between the lucky and the unlucky.
