About Randy Lau

Randy Lau is a Founder & Content Creator at Made With Lau at Made With Lau. He possess expertise in c++, data analysis, matlab, start ups, labview and 14 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "Randy has the qualities of a great team player, a great leader — a valuable member of any company. Randy is highly motivated and driven, and his work ethic and energy are infectious. One of his most valuable assets is his eagerness to learn and grow. He is able to put his ego aside to accomplish what is needed, and to learn from those experiences as well. Randy is also a great leader and is always willing to put himself out there and lead by example. He is able to push his team to deliver without upsetting the chemistry of the team. His leadership was a large contributing factor to his team’s chemistry and success. Randy also provided attentive management of clients, setting and managing expectations. And when the necessary, stepped in and took ownership of the product, showing empathy for the client and advocating for the product in the face of engineering/scheduling challenges. I greatly appreciated his talent, his effort, and his desire to grow. I look forward to any future opportunities to collaborate with Randy." and "As a Computer Science Professor, part of my job is to mentor students in order to help them achieve their goals. I have acted as such a mentor to Randy since he approached me for advice on a start-up idea he conceived of last year. Randy is unusual in that he brings intelligence, a voracious appetite to learn new things, passion, and a huge amount of creativity to everything that he does. To cite one example, over the last few years (as part of his research for a start-up idea), he has read dozens of books about business, conveying ideas, thinking, science, technology, etc., and has demonstrated amazing retention and ability to communicate the key concepts from these readings. On more than one occasion, Randy has cited and explained theories from his readings (e.g., how the human brain best integrates new information and how this therefore should be factored into the design of a website's user interface) and explained the relevance of those theories to his project. Such discipline and passion is rare in our industry veterans, let-alone recent college graduates (who are loathe to read books after being ruined by college textbooks). While I've had many smart students in the past, few have the creativity, discipline, integrity and passion that Randy has demonstrated. Randy has often intimated to me that he wants to change the world - and I have no doubt that with his rare combination of skills, he one day will. It is for this reason that I endorse him on LinkedIn."

    Founder
Common - Translated Messaging Platform Jan 2016 - Jan 2018
Common is a translating messaging service that helps people communicate in spite of a language barrier, using a combination of machine translation tools and certified human translators. As a son of Chinese immigrants, I've always had trouble talking with my Dad. I never learned enough Chinese to connect on a deeper level with my Dad (who doesn't speak English). To me, there's nothing more hindering than not being able to communicate with people that matter to me.
  • Feel
    Founder
    Feel Mar 2014 - Nov 2014

  • Quirky
    Inventor
    Quirky May 2012 - Nov 2013
I had a personal goal of creating and submitting 100 original invention ideas to Quirky, a company that crowdsources invention ideas and turns them into household products. In the span of 200 days, I:- Brainstormed 2000+ invention ideas, and sketched out the 100 best ideas- Hired 10 freelance designers across 5 continents to produce 100 3D renders- Taught myself Photoshop to make my 100 ideas presentable- Submitted all 100 ideasHowever, after all of that work, Quirky still didn't pick any of my ideas. A few of them made it to finalist rounds, but still nothing. To convince them to pick my ideas, I spent another 6 months to:- Cold-call Quirky staff about my ideas- Teach myself InDesign to create what would become a hardcover book of my 100 ideas- Order custom-made purple M&Ms with the face of Quirky's CEOs printed on them- Mail 8 copies of my books and M&Ms to Quirky's headquartersOn November 22nd, 2013, amidst hundreds of thousands of other ideas submitted by their community, they finally picked my Camera Cubby idea for development.
  • Isbx
    Technical Project Manager
    Isbx Jan 2011 - Jul 2013
    Los Angeles, California, Us
I managed a multimillion dollar learning platform for Pierson Labs, a venture-funded startup serving entire countries and corporations. I worked closely with our VP of Technology to execute our partner's vision and to oversee an internal team of 9 developers in 2 countries. My responsibilities included gathering requirements, planning product releases, shaping UI and UX design, coding features, QA and testing for usability, demonstrating and delivering our products, and maintaining the relationships between our team and our partner team.In addition, I went to Australia with our CTO and Pierson Labs' founding executives, where I demonstrated our products to CEOs and leaders within the Australian education system, enabling our partner to secure a new contract. In cooperation with our Australian client, we determined the requirements and design for a social network for Australia's teachers. Within 32 days, our team developed and launched. Within three months, the social network hosts the conversations and collaboration amongst thousands of Australian educators.I led the development of an app on the Nintendo 3DS for Random House Publishing. Using Nintendo's proprietary, low level C++ SDKs, I created our own MVC framework, touch and event handlers, data parsers and loaders, animation threads, and etc. I presented our work to senior management at Nintendo. I led the development of an iOS app for a nonprofit health organization. The premise of the app was to track a user's daily physical and emotional health across a variety of different metrics. A main requirement was offline storage and synchronization with an existing website, so we created a data model using CoreData and collaborated with their engineers to design a web service layer. I was also a developer and project manager on 14 other apps over the span of 2 years. The clients I worked with were primarily focused on education, health, or entertainment, and their accounts ranged from $30k to $500k in size.
  • Ucla Engineering
    Undergraduate Researcher
    Ucla Engineering Jun 2008 - Dec 2010
I developed software for several biomedical engineering research labs. My projects primarily focused on device automation and data analysis, using LabView, MATLAB, and C++.For Ozcan Laboratory, I created a UI and program to control an array of cameras in order to generate 3D images of microorganisms. The program was responsible for automatically positioning the cameras at intervals of 5-20 microns per step, and capturing and analyzing hundreds of images over the course of 30 minutes. For ASCENT Laboratory, I developed software to gather and analyze sensor output for various projects. A few highlights include analyzing a user's gait with an array of pressure sensors embedded in shoe soles, and quantifying a patient's rehabiliation progress with a set of torque sensors embedded in a pedaling system.
  • Ucla Aca Hip Hop
    Coordinator, Choreographer
Ucla Aca Hip Hop Sep 2005 - Jun 2010
I led a competitive hip hop dance team of 40 dancers. Our leadership team of 3 oversaw all executive, artistic, and interpersonal aspects of the team. We planned and managed over 2000 hours of practices, and performed in front of thousands on stages all across Southern California. I gained invaluable experience through working closely with others to envision and execute ideas, teaching and mentoring dancers, managing interpersonal dynamics and morale under stress, and motivating our team to push towards a common goal.
  • Vitesse Semiconductor
