Mr. Tom is currently serving as a Lecturer at the Graduate Business School at St. Mary’s College of California, teaching the course “Financing a New Venture” to executive MBA candidates. Responsible for creating the inaugural course curriculum in the Entrepreneurial Studies Program enrolled in the School's MBA program, Mr. Tom has been responsible for creating over 48 hours of classroom lectures, comprising of the integration of in class discussions led by distinguished venture capitalists and entrepreneurs, venture finance textbooks and small business publications, both print and online resources. Combining an extensive reading selected by Mr. Tom with an emphasis on teamwork, the course curriculum devised by him includes the creation of the multitude of steps needed to present to venture capitalists and other professional investors. After team preparations of Pitch Books, Executive Summaries, and completed Business Plan/Private Placement Memorandums, the class culminates with an oral presentation of such plan to a panel of professionals venture capitalists, lawyers and entrepreneurs. I was an Adjunct Professor of Corporations, Securities and Business Associations, where I prepared the curriculum, lectures, legal case law materials and statutes and PowerPoint and other online presentations and techniques. While lecturing for a term, consisting of 16 weeks of a weekly three-hour class session, as well as a four hour period for office visits, I taught more than 70 students in connection with their preparation for the July 2007 bar examination. For the first time in the bar’s history, business associations were going to be tested on the examination, and I was the first professor to prepare students for that exam with respect to the new topics such as the formation and use of limited liability companies, limited and general partnerships, and nonprofit entities. Since such a course had never been taught before, I was forced to improvise by merging the two subject matters of Corporate and Securities Regulations with the Formation of Business Associations, courses that were three hours weekly for each semester separately. This experience required innovation in order to address the students concerns regarding the extent of the subject matter of business associations, which had never been tested on the exam before, not enabling the students to review past examples of essays and model answers to them. With the use of slides and PowerPoint presentation materials, I was able to spend a small portion of the lecture time to Business Associations, enabling the students to learn the basics that might have been tested on that subject. My students reported to me that on that exam,Summer 2007, there was a corporations and securities law essay which they indicated to me that I had prepared them well to answer.
