The district serves the student populations to whom I've dedicated my entire career, with nearly 25% of its students being English language learners and 75% qualifying for free or reduced-fee meals based on their income. They live in the heart of an increasingly diverse city, and it will be my job to make sure that their schools are offering them the kinds of high-quality academic opportunities they deserve and will need to succeed in Iowa or beyond.

In that capacity, I have the privilege of designing and teaching graduate-level courses in the areas of Curriculum Development & Design, School Law, Educational Leadership, Educational Research, and Diversity in Academic Settings to multiple cohorts of UST graduate students.

I had the privilege of returning to my classroom roots in 2013 as a teacher of English and Debate at YES Prep Public Schools' Brays Oaks campus. Serving sixth through ninth graders, I was deeply proud of the growth exhibited by my students.

In my capacity as Model Leader and Chief Academic Officer, I was responsible for the management of four K-8 charter schools serving over 1000 low-income Cleveland students. I oversaw the successful establishment of two new campuses and ongoing training of all principals.

In my role as Vice President for University Partnerships with Teach For America, I was charged with overseeing our certification and master’s partnerships across our 43 regions. In addition, I held responsibility for the identification and cultivation of future partners that could support our 8000+ teachers nationwide.

As the founding leader of Teach First's Midlands region, I am proud to have established a thriving start-up organization now regarded by local leaders as one of the leading agents of educational change in the area. In that capacity, I facilitated the selection and training of regional staff members, the placement and support of over 100 teachers serving in low-income schools, the cultivation of diverse business and community partnerships, the development of a comprehensive leadership development curriculum for all program participants, and the building of public awareness about the organization throughout the region.

In my capacity as Director of Academic Achievement for St. HOPE Public Schools, I supported all campus administrators for a K-12 public charter school system serving over 1500 students. In addition, I led our district-wide professional development program and served as an advisor to the Chief Executive & Academic Officers on organizational expansion efforts.

As the founding director of YES College Preparatory School – Southwest, a college preparatory charter school serving low-income students across the Houston area, I relished the opportunity to create a school from the ground up fostering exemplary student achievement. This entailed recruiting a student body of over 200 students, selecting and training sixteen faculty members, mobilizing community support, soliciting parent involvement, refining curricula, evaluating and mentoring teachers, and planning for the school’s expansion.

As the creator and instructor of “Education Beyond The Hedges: Houston Urban Education In Context”, I successfully engaged university administrators, education professors, students, and community members in an examination of how to offer Rice University undergraduate students both a true picture of the issues affecting urban educators and motivate them to get involved in improving schools. This led to the creation of the course taught to over 120 students from 2003 to 2005, integrating guest speakers and examination of educational theory with observation and service in a Houston Title I low-income school.
