Robert m Cox, EdD LCMHC (NC) LCAS CCS LPC-MHP-S (TN) CCMHC NCC ACS is a behavioral health trainer, supervisor, counselor, and consultant serving NC and TN from their practice, Cox Family Wellness Systems, in Salisbury NC. Dr Cox began professional practice in 1998 and founded Cox Family Wellness Systems to serve families affected by substance use, trauma, and grief and loss. They work from a trauma-informed approach that folds in Behavioral-Cognitive Therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic concepts to explore ways of Being who one is.A Professional JourneyCurrently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy at Pfeiffer University, Dr Cox directs the university counseling and wellness center and teaches graduate and undergraduate counseling courses. They supply counseling, consulting, training, and supervision services with a focus on substance use disorders in a systemic context. Their doctoral research evaluated a group counseling intervention with inmates with mental illness, an experience that highlighted the long life of psychological pain.Their career journey includes direct service, administration, and program development. Dr Cox worked with the homeless before they moved into outpatient substance use treatment and emergency behavioral health. In 2012 they moved to Memphis Tennessee to continue their education. While in Memphis Dr Cox continued counseling in inpatient and outpatient settings. Their first academic appointment came in 2016 with Pfeiffer University.Dr Cox is the author of peer-reviewed articles about inmate mental health and they regularly train counselors in applications of trauma-informed approaches, clinical supervision, and evidence-based treatment models. Their professional interests include crisis intervention, families affected by substance use, and the use of mindfulness in counseling.
