About Rebecca Rice

I am a cartographer turned software engineer with almost a decade of industry experience in developing and delivering software solutions for public and private sector clients. My passion is to build software that empowers its users to solve challenging problems regarding our Earth. That is what led me to Danti, where I am building out our data pipeline and enabling data delivery to support our AI geospatial search engine. As an engineering manager at Premise, I built and led a fullstack team of junior to staff-level engineers on a cross-functional customer product team. We maintained legacy applications while building out a brand new customer platform to deliver data insights for commercial, international development, and global security interests. I provided mentorship on engineering best practices, postmortem culture, planning and prioritization, and software and architecture design to engineers on my team and Premise's broader engineering org. I also introduced sprint cycles, automated project management, and formalized release cycle to improve the team's efficiency and quality.I am a naturally inclined leader and have grown into leadership roles on every team I've been on - at Mapbox, I worked on Atlas, Mapbox's on-premises solution. I grew from sole IC to the team's tech lead and oversaw the product built from scratch to customer delivery. Once we shipped Atlas, I yearned for experience with Mapbox's highly available services powering applications like Strava, The Weather Channel, and Lyft, and started working with the Maps API team. This gave me experience and confidence in maintaining legacy API services, building and deploying new API services, defining and tracking SLOs/SLAs, responding to incidents, and building monitoring systems and tooling. Eventually, I officially became team lead. Before that, at DigitalGlobe, my first job out of grad school, I stepped in as scrum master and guided the team's prioritization and planning. Prior to my career in tech, I coached club + summer league swimming.Skilled in Node.js, Typescript, Python, Docker, Kubernetes, React, Git, AWS and GCP. Experienced and have worked with many other technologies (golang, cpp, rust). I embrace adaptability as a core strength.Beyond my professional life I'm passionate about fitness and nutrition. I enjoy bikes, lifting, swimming, surfing, walking and playing with my dogs, reading, and gardening.
