SIGGIS consists of a strong team of earth scientists and IT specialists. They offer expert advice and tailored services for the integration of geographic information systems (GIS) and related software. I have been at SIGGIS from day 1. So besides assuring clients and contracts, I was also involved in setting up a new +40 staff company. In time, my prime focus was account management, of mainly the Flemish government, but also other large (private) organizations. Besides I also performed several marketing tasks.

At ESRI BeLux I performed several conceptual analyzes of GIS projects at the Flemish government. The project topics were hydrographic networks, rural planning & departmental administration.The team I worked with was inspiring and the topics were most interesting. Still, personal considerations made me decide to move on to a next challenge.

STAR-APIC is Europe’s largest creator of GIS software and I had a broad range of commercial tasks. Still above all it was my mission to help the company find new markets for existing products. Examples were car-crash analysis in Flanders, tourism in Holland or digital cartography in Malaysia, India an Italy. It often happened that during these searches variations or whole new specialties were being developed, such as field navigation for utility network management, navigational data conversion services or interaction between cartographic workstations and Oracle databases.The job as business developer demanded a constant interaction with the industries involved. As such I tried to stay informed by reading a lot and visiting all sorts of events and institutes. The gathered experiences proved to be commercially valuable, but also rather useful during internal meetings about support and product development.

When Star Informatic took over the cartographic division of Esko-Graphics I was asked to become the main Account Manager for Asia and several specific accounts in Europe and North-Africa. In this role I had to monitor customer’s progress, and also was I actively involved in the sales process of all products and services. This way I have enable dealers, colleagues and myself to achieve several successes. New accounts in Russia and Libya are good examples of this.Besides commercial responsibilities, I was also often involved in feasibility studies for product development or project managent. The emphasis with this lay mostly on productivity, quality and GUI ergonomics.

As in previous job (Barco), my tasks were teaching, consultancy, and technical support of our cartographic production systems. In daily work I scripted workflows, tested new releases, wrote documentation and performed benchmark tests. At all time did we focus on combining uncompromised cartographic quality and a complete automation of related production process.In time I was also asked more frequently to assist during presentations and demonstrations. While doing this we often had high-level discussions about geographic database structures, typical cartographic issues and possible solutions.
