Computational/experimental biophysicist specializing in protein design, molecular simulation, and thermodynamics. Interested in the application of macromolecular design and structural bioinformatics to targets of industrial or therapeutic utility. Personal special interests in macromolecular machines, the nature and origins of conformational ensembles, and the roles of electric fields in protein function.I received my Ph.D. in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry from UCSD for my work using molecular dynamics to elucidate the physical bases for anomalous physical properties in designed protein materials. I carried out experimental characterization of these materials and used results from both aspects of my project to inform the other, building a holistic understanding of this system and enabling me to produce switches, sensors, and novel types of biomolecular assemblies.I was then an Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Scholar in the Kortemme lab working on the de novo design of energy-consuming protein switches that utilize a novel biophysical mechanism for energy transduction before moving to my current position as Senior Scientist at Prescient Design, a Genentech accelerator.Google scholar: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=oHEGV3cAAAAJORCID: 0000-0002-6655-8811

Graduate Student ResearcherUniversity Of California San Diego Sep 2014 - May 2020La Jolla, Ca, UsI apply experimental and theoretical techniques to understand the self-assembly and emergent properties of protein-based nanomaterials. Advised by F. Akif TezcanThesis title: "Material properties by design: controlling the self-assembly, dynamics, and emergent attributes of reconfigurable two-dimensional protein crystals" -
Postbaccalaureate Research TraineeNational Institutes Of Health Jul 2013 - Jul 2014Bethesda, Md, UsStructural biology of ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) from the primitive comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi. Expressed, purified, and biochemically assayed iGluR ligand binding domains pulled from the M. leidyi genome. Obtained rigorous training in X-ray crystallography revealing the origin of glycine selectivity and introductory molecular dynamics quantified the role of a salt-bridge that seals the binding site, leading to ultra-high affinity. This work resulted in two publications in PNAS. -
Undergraduate ResearcherMellon Institute May 2012 - May 2013Development of a novel protein-molecule interaction based fluorescence microscopy platform. Experience included PCR primer design, yeast display & purification, fluorescence plate-reader assays, and FACS to optimize binding between designed protein and the fluorophore of interest.
