Director And Head Of Managed And Technical ServicesNorthdoor Plc Jul 1990 - PresentLondon, London, GbFrom being the general go-to chap for Technical Support during Northdoor's genesis to joining the board in '97, I've seen plenty of change over the years. From twinax to Apple Macs, from CRT to HTTP, from console to remote control and from batch job to storage blob, there's been a lot going on, and much of it doesn't even rhyme. Service has always been the thing for me. Sure, I've worked with a lot of IT products from some really great companies like IBM, Microsoft and several others and it has come in many different shapes and sizes, but I've found that what most people need - real people who have real jobs to do - is a good ear, a quality response and a solution to match. In today's everything as a service world, it's where an IT Services company needs to be. Today I work with a great team of hard working professionals delivering Northdoor's technical solutions and services. It's a privilege. Genuinely. -
Technical Support AnalystSherwood Computer Services May 1984 - Jul 1990One of the operations team until I joined Technical Support, I cut my teeth on IBM systems at Sherwood. The System/36, simple but effective and of course the favourite system of almost everyone who's ever used one, the AS/400. I got into Technical Support by being bored watching the overnight backups write file names one after another at 9600 baud to the paper based consoles on the bureau systems. Dull. I rewrote the backup routine to write them to file instead thereby generating countless additional bureau processing hours. Cool (well, I thought so).

Computer OperatorThe Corporation Of London May 1982 - May 1984My first job. That's when I thought loading 2400-foot reel-to-reel tapes on tape drives that looked like they'd come from a 1960's Sci-Fi movie was cool. And card readers (that's punched cardboard cards, not credit cards). I thought they were cool too. And 200Mb (Yes Mb) disk drives the size of dishwashers. Cool. When I wrote a character-graphic space invaders program on a DRS20 attached to the ICL mainframe on a night shift and got in trouble for it, it was time to move on.
