I am the proud owner of Rob Bordon boxing gym. I took on my unit last April just as the pandemic hit and I opened up in July and although I’ve had to shut during the lockdowns, I’ve had a very successful first year and I I have built up a very good client base. I provide my clients with private sessions which are usually an hour but I can accommodate people with less or more too and in these sessions I have a variety of training methods from focus pads, punch bag workouts, circuit training and for people who want it self defence work and sparring. My clients range from people who have never boxed and fancy learning a bit, people who want to compete and have none or little experience, people with experience who want to get better and then people who aren’t to bothered about the boxing side but want to improve their fitness and confidence and lose weight. A lot of people who I train were very nervous before starting but as they were made to feel very comfortable whilst training with me, they all rebooked and so now I am very busy. I have a friendly environment and a very good sound system to make the training a bit easier and more enjoyable! I have also started classes now, I have boxing classes, ones for beginners and ones for advanced. I also have women’s only classes and circuit training classes. At the end of September I will also be starting a white collar training camp where I will be training people new to boxing for 8 weeks to have a match against another beginner from another gym. This will be held at Riva Showbar in Preston and we’ll also be raising money for Manchester mind mental health charity.

When I got sciatica, I struggled to train and I had to stop boxing. After a couple of months of recovery, I went back into the gym as a coach. The first 6 months of coaching I found it very hard as I wasn’t used to telling others what to do I was always used to being told myself. But as the weeks went by I got better and better and I gained a lot of valuable experience. I got my level 1 AIBA boxing coaching badge and I this allowed me to go in the corners with my boxers for their fights. I travelled all over the country and I went to Dublin 3 times where our boxers took part in the Dublin box cup. I did the corners for over 50 fights in my time as an amateur coach and this has given me invaluable experience and I got a lot of enjoyment out of it and made some friends for life.

At the age of 14 I began boxing training. I had my first fight when I was 15 and my last one when I 27. I had to stop due to sciatica but this has improved over the years so I’m still able to train to a very high standard. Altogether I had 32 amateur fights and I also gained some valuable experience boxing around the country as well as in Guernsey twice and Poland once. I never managed to win any titles but I enjoyed my boxing career and that is the main thing. The experience I’ve gained over the years boxing is also very valuable as I can this on to people I coach now.
