Started at NPL as an distant scientific officer in Ken Mills’ group, first on thermal analysis and moved on to surface tension using levitation induction melting. I also developed the method to measure density and enthalpy (by drop calorimetry) of liquid metals and alloys, and the cold crucible to assess cleanness of alloys. The group developed many thermophysical property measurement methods and models which I was lucky to help with in support of metal processing industries, including viscosity, thermal diffusivity and heat capacity.As time went on I started managing projects in my group and with MTDATA, and then, as the group structure changed, I ended up a Group Leader for Advanced Engineered Materials, adding high temperature oxidation, mechanical testing, residual stress and optical and electron imaging to thermophysical properties. In 2019 I moved to the Electromagnetic and Electrochemical Materials Department to cover Electrochemistry before moving to my current group

  I moved over to be group leader of the Electronic and Magnetic Materials early in 2020. The group covers cutting edge developments of imaging and spectroscopy of materials aimed largely at semiconductors, PV performance, magnetic characterisation and accredited measurements and performance of electronic circuits and protective coatings in harsh environments. Much of work fits under electrification for net zero and electrification of transport. My job includes the management of a portfolio of projects and programmes funded by Government, the European Commission and Industry, and looking after 25 scientists
