Hannover Area, Germany

I was the production coordinator for 31 Armoured Engineer Squadron (AES) in their pre-deployment training for OP HERRICK 18 and subsequently deployed on operations with them. As part of the Talisman group I was the senior hands on tradesman for the squadron on a highly sophisticated set of equipment. During pre-deployment training I had to lead my section through several complex equipment courses on, HMEE (High Mobility Engineer Excavator), Talon, RWS (Remote Weapons System) fitted to the Mastiff protected eyes variant. The variety and specialisation of equipment required a careful balance of trades, Mechanics techs and Armourers were all required to share trade knowledge collectively so that the two men selected to deploy onto the ground would be as well informed as possible in the event of equipment failure.

Hannover Area, Germany

Whilst here deployed on a six-month exercise to Kenya where he was the lead vehicle inspector for over 700 vehicle platforms ranging from quad bikes to the mobile TEREX Crane. On return from Kenya attended and passed Potential Artificer Assessment Board and subsequently promoted and was selected for Artificer training. On return from Kenya I assumed the role of section head in HQ Sqn fitters in the absence of a SSgt and Sgt, as the senior Cpl in the LAD I relished the opportunity to take over portions of responsibility that normally fall onto SNCO’s. I began sitting in on the production conferences and giving feedback to the ASM, liaising directly with the Sqn QM(T) as he prepared the Sqn to deploy on a construction tour EX OAKAPPLE. I was fortunate that this would take me back to Kenya where I had just left and so I had excellent ties to the technical command once the Sqn deployed. As the sole class 1 tradesman I had to support all of the trades in my section with technical advice, I had to refresh the mechanics in my section on reading hydraulic diagrams when the Iveco volumetric mixer broke down and I had to talk through electrical principals with the technician when the only concrete finishing machine (power float) broke down. This was a truly testing deployment for my technical skills.

Herford, Germany

I returned to trade training to qualify as a class one vehicle mechanic after which I was immediately assigned to 1 ADSR. I deployed on attachment to 1 Med Regt to EX SHARP POINT in Kenya. I was the subject matter expect of all equipment to the Troop of Medics to who I was assigned. I was tested when the generators which power fridges for the control drugs broke down. My in-depth knowledge of electrical theory provided a successful solution and the generators were temporarily repaired, saving the medication on which the entire exercise relied. In addition to this I was joined by a Class 3 VM whom, I successfully mentored thought his Class 3-2 progression. At the end of the exercise I was heavily involved in the set up of the return of equipment, which consisted of 3 lines of production Heavy, light and miscellaneous equipment, this was my introduction to LEAN processes and the layout and composition of an Engineering Management System. My next deployment was to Belize, assigned to the international jungle warfare advisor course as a sole vehicle mechanic for the exercise. Working with only basic tools and equipment, at the side of the jungle, with no infrastructure and no technical assistance, I performed a series of in-depth repairs on an extremely tired fleet of vehicles and equipment using the Dutch communication specialist to assist as a second pair of hands when they were off shift. I was pleasantly surprised at how well technical language transfers between nationalities and gained an appreciation for working alongside NATO partners.

Germany

This was my first assignment in the army. While with 7 TPT regiment I deployed to Northern Ireland as a vehicle electrician and was responsible for the diagnosing and repair of the fleet of public order vehicles, predominantly Saxon APC. I was the workshop COSHH representative and was tasked to maintain the supply of COSHH and ensure compliance with HSE regulations on the workshop floor on behalf of the shop floor manager. I deployed on a NATO let operation to Afghanistan where my electrical knowledge and expertise paid dividends for the battalion. Not only contributing to operational success personally, but delivering additional lessons and improving knowledge and expertise of my cohort. I was also responsible for the fleet of armoured white fleet vehicles and in addition to passing on my electrical expertise, I was able to learn the skills of repairing and painting body work.
