We used Microsoft Visual Studio, SQL Server Data Tools and SQL Server Integration Services for the ETL routines. The source code was version controlled using Team Foundation Server and we used SQL Server Management Studio on a daily basis to interact with various SQL Server instances. The migration faced several significant challenges :- Limited supplier migration interface Data duplication in source system Source system used same data fields in different ways over time Data Quality Target system was being configured and developed during the projectThe migration had to deliver test loads of data to support wider project milestones. We successfully delivered every one on time. The ETL process included a significant validation and quality assurance stage. The validation checked all the lookup values supplied against the target database. The quality assurance scripts were mainly around the financial information. At a given point in time we checked the charges and transactions generated in the old system versus the new system. The migration would not be signed off until this comparison matched.

When browsing a particular product the requirement was to be able to easily see similar available products. The information needed to include price structure and inventory levels for the suggested products.I worked on all aspects of the successful delivery of this solution, from detailed design to coding and testing.

We made significant advances in process improvement. We achieved a reliable body of code and were able to repeat our migration as desired for testing.The data migration required complete reverse engineering of the target system to understand where the migrated data needed to go. This is a significant barrier to delivery due to having to find and adhere to many layers of application logic.We moved to a migration cycle where the data could be cleared down, the migration process executed and the results quantified and proved, prior to my arrival that was not possible. That cycle allows us to proceed with specification documents, code development, testing and deployment.The migration data set was defined by a cohort of service users derived using very specific retention rules. These rules were coded into an automated process used to reduce the source to only the cohort relevant data.We implemented a migration database which included a copy of certain Siebel base tables, cohort code, stage tables and load code.The target system has a completely integrated finance workspace which makes payments to service providers and direct payments to service users. We had to migrate this very sensitive data from 2 source systems and blend the two data sources into the new data model for finance. This was a significant challenge. The migration involved moving documents from Siebel to Microsoft Sharepoint.The target system was under development during the project, specifically to meet the needs of the care act, which meant the migration had to constantly adapt to these changes.

The database is fed by multiple disparate back office systems through a data integration hub and Oracle Middleware. The database holds all data concerned with product catalogue, price, and inventory levels. It also holds information about the supply network in terms of websites, warehouses, and languages.The database makes extensive use of many Oracle features including Advanced QueuesExternal TablesXMLDBParallel ExecutionSchedulerPartitioningTriggersMaterialized ViewsThe PL/SQL code is all package based, adheres to a PF coding standards document and is written according to current best practice.The development is completed according to the agile methodology using daily Scrum meetings.Deployment - During the development phase I was responsible for ensuring deployment went smoothly. An automatic deployment tool was used to deploy database objects from an SVN repository. Initially it was an arduous task to make sure that all the code held under version control would deploy without error and produce no invalid objects. Ultimately that hard work has paid off as gained the ability to test development work on a daily basis to make sure that what we stored in our code base deploys successfully.Data Migration - 6 month secondment to migration team in order to help with their database code, specifically bug fixing and addressing faults found in testing. The migration code base was PL/SQL packages with supporting shell scripts and Java programs.Premier Farnell had a policy of using Agile methodologies for software development. The team had daily stand ups as well as rigorous code reviews, unit testing and defined sprints.

I was in constant contact with the supplier technical team to negotiate and agree technical solutions on both sides to facilitate the migration. I had to consult with all areas of the business on how their data would be migrated. I managed their expectations as well as agreeing cleansing exercises that were required at migration time. I then implemented these cleansing solutions across the whole database in order that the integrity of the data was maintained. I wrote a large body of PL/SQL which cleansed and transformed the data prior to it being sent to the new system supplier. The data quality in the existing system was very poor as a result of bad application logic and non existent validation at the point of data entry. This meant the cleansing/migration exercise was both large and complex.A year was spent reverse engineering every aspect of the outgoing application and database in order to ensure that the migration was done correctly. That reverse engineering was successfully led by me.I devised and executed a detailed test program for the migration. This proved to be invaluable as the code was refined and tuned each time, ultimately leading to a successful go live weekend. The migration test program supported both UAT and OAT in the run up to go live.

Skills – Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, VBA, Business Engagement, Managing StaffI was the lead technical advisor on the central Oracle database as well as the many subsidiary Access databases. I completely revised the team’s processes to reduce points of failure and increase the data integrity of the main system. I re developed parts of the stats reporting mechanism to increase it’s accuracy and make it far more robustIn conjunction with the technical teams at HRMS and JPA I set up automated interfaces to both those HR systems.I developed a new task management system for the helpdesk so that management could better understand how their staff were performing.I re designed and implemented a work allocation program for vetting officers (remote workers).

Skills – Oracle PL/SQL, TOAD• I was one half of a 2 man team that wrote an essential component of middleware to ensure correct data transfer from multiple upstream applications into a single large multi org Oracle database. The structure and quality of the data loaded in the repository database was paramount. Integrating many data models successfully into the data model of the single target database was a significant challenge.• We were given sole responsibility for the design and build of this component and delivered it under extreme pressure from the business. The component was written in PL/SQL supported by new tables/views and db links where required. • This was done for one of BT Global Services largest contracts at the time, worth billions in revenue.

The config/user data was migrated to SQL Server during the time I was there.The application’s purpose to query, write and amend data in a central Oracle database. On a day to day basis this involved the querying and manipulation of data (Oracle/Access/SQL Server). We needed to constantly verify that the data being loaded or changed was correct. This involved a lot of complex business logic which was mapped out in the database structure. These relationships had to be maintained by the application at all times. Each iteration was subject to rigorous unit testing during development, User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and Operational Acceptance Testing (OAT) prior to deployment.

As part of this ongoing work the data and more importantly the business logic held in these legacy systems had to be migrated to the new platform. This migration involved the transfer of cleansed data, collection of any required additional data, analysis or business logic followed by creation of new requirements for the Operations Support Systems (OSS) and coordination of the developments of all OSS to synchronise them. The number of OSS that depended on the data we loaded was large. The main 2 were fault management and reporting. The business produced a wide range of internal and customer reports from the central database using Business Objects reporting universes. This meant that incorrect data was a huge problem as it was customer facing. When the need arose I consulted on existing migration tools/practices and worked with all parties to design and implement new tools/practices or adapt existing ones. The design of a new migration strategy involved liaising with database designers, customers, project management as well as the respective lead developers for the various OSS. The overall direction of the project was determined by a solutions architect who provided us with documentation usually, UML and/or RUP, to make sure the new system was evolving inline with their design.

Skills – ASP, VBA, Oracle PL/SQL, JavaScript, HTML• The business relied upon a large Oracle database containing customer inventory data. The database model included a protective PL/SQL data service layer which meant the info was inaccessible to non (Oracle) skilled staff. • I was one of 3 original architects that created a web application to allow real time querying and updating of this database. The web application was largely data driven to reduce maintenance overhead and future development time/costs. • We grew a trained and operational user base from 0 to 400 in 12 months. This was achieved through user led requirements capture to ensure the new application was embraced by a reluctant user community.

Skills – VBA, Oracle SQL and PL/SQL I was part of a small development team responsible for the loading of new data and migration of historic data followed by the maintenance of this data. We developed new applications to:• Load large volumes of data into the central Oracle db• Verify the integrity of that data prior to loading.• Allow internal authorised users to view and correct customer dataOver time we developed faster loading tools and better data collection tools. We also conceived an intranet application to allow real time updates.

Skills – Data Analysis, Data Cleansing, ETL Design/Coding/Testing, VBA, Oracle SQL, PL/SQL I worked on a large Oracle db that supported many applications including reporting applications such as Business Objects, fault management, order management etc. Historic data had to be migrated from legacy systems/sources. Our team created migration tools that allowed the automation of data collection and loading. Due to the number and variation of the legacy systems this was a large and demanding task. Our migration tools were coded in VBA (MS Access). They centred on the collection of any or all data followed by verification and clean up stage before feeding into our automated loading tool.

Skills – Oracle SQL and PL/SQL, MS Access, UNIXI had responsibility for the largest contracts as well as helping other team members. Each contract had different billing and reporting requirements. Our team developed and maintained bespoke billing/reporting capabilities that ranged from high level invoices right down to detailed itemised billing. This could mean the itemisation of millions of call records which would have to match to the higher level invoices. If they didn’t my job was to find out why and correct it. I used SQL to interrogate both Oracle and Access databases as well as debugging PL/SQL stored procedures which were used during the automated billing processes.

Skills – Oracle SQL and PL/SQL, MS Access, UNIXThis role involved querying large volumes of data in Oracle db’s. The interface was UNIX with some basic shell scripting. All programs were written and maintained in house. My role involved “running” automated processes and verifying that the information produced was accurate. I was responsible for finding errors in bills and identifying how they had occurred. I used SQL to query Oracle databases and started to learn PL/SQL in order to follow what some billing processes were doing.
