About Rob Deabreu

I am an international educator who has taught mostly MYP and DP Mathematics in many countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, Ghana, Vietnam, South Korea and Singapore. After UNIS Hanoi, I moved to Vancouver to pursue a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education full time, then rejoined the profession keen to contribute strategies based on current research and to further my understanding of curriculum and pedagogy. All students can learn Mathematics at high levels of complexity. This belief is foundational to all I do with students, parents and faculty. It guides me as I build relationships with and among students and differentiate lessons, materials, and tasks with intention to provide access to intricate mathematical concepts. It fuels my mission to nurture students’ growth mindset development. It brought me to Jo Boaler’s work on relational equity, complex instruction, and the benefits of rich, open, group-worthy, tasks. It inspires me to pursue further professional study to broaden my range of approaches, enhance learning, and help students achieve their goals. It influences my eagerness to share with and learn from colleagues through a variety of professional development and leadership roles. It informs my ongoing dialogue with parents and students about growth. As an advocate of holistic education, I value service learning, pastoral leadership, and support co-curricular activities and outdoor education opportunities wherever possible. I have established Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) service learning programs in two international schools, providing profound experiences for students. Additionally, I have co-led experiential learning excursions, each offering unique and powerful opportunities for growth for my students and me. I lead math clubs, manage mathematics competitions, run half-marathons, mentor personal projects and extended essays, and am a staunch pastoral advocate for students.

Listed skills include Curriculum Design, Curriculum Development, Educational Technology, Teaching, and 11 others.

I contributed to wider school growth through our Inclusive Practices and MYP Committees.I led a team of 8 teachers in a partnership with Branksome Hall, Toronto, to grow the Grade 9 Exchange Programme. Working specifically on the portion of the exchange where students from Branksome Hall in Canada visit Branksome Hall Asia in Jeju, our team developed an interdisciplinary study of sustainability by investigating wind energy in teams to design, construct, test, and iterate their own turbines. Students used design thinking strategies to research turbines, develop prototypes, implement innovations, test their ideas and make data-driven adjustments. Students reflected periodically using a team blog and presented their final work formally and in an informal showcase to the entire secondary school. As Head of Department, I led and supported department members in implementation and development of MYP and DP Programmes, with a focus on unit planning and on assessment task development. I facilitated collaborative curriculum development as we revisited and refined scope and sequence to allow for smoother transition between year levels and introduced Standard and Extended streamed classes. I fostered student access to and interest in STEAM through a Math Club and through the implementation of Canadian Mathematics Competitions.Outside the classroom, I facilitated our Community Interaction student team to teach English language at Moseulpo Children’s Center and directed our Peer Support student team to provide relationship-building skills to sixth grade students. I guided interdisciplinary curricular development and coordinated Grade 6 Week Without Walls, guiding teachers to make more authentic links that enriched our work with the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre. All of these initiatives were made possible through the hard work of the approximately 15 grade level teachers working under my direction to support approximately 90 students in the grade level. In co-curricular activities, I established and coordinated Habitat for Humanity (HFH)-partnered Service Learning Program (SLP), leading two weekend trips to Vinh Phuc and one 6-day trip to Hai Duong.
