I have a background in music, completing a degree in jazz and then Wellington as a professional bass player, composer and arranger in 2002. I then worked on and coordinated many artistic projects, and allowed my creative abilities to develop. I moved to London for several years continuing in this field, but also working for Local Authorities in an administrative position. Working in both music and administration gave me a chance to understand the discipline that is required for an office environment and working in teams, as well as keeping hold of my creative flair and finding an outlet for that. During this time I recorded two songs, and put them up on to iTunes and Spotify.On return to Wellington in 2014, I was looking for opportunities to enhance my career, give myself new challenges and move into a vibrant area which will engage my mind and potentially lead to new creative opportunities in the future. On hearing about DevAcademy, a boot camp of sorts in web development, I was excited about the opportunities this can provide and decided to do the course and take my career in this direction. Without having a technical background, I found that the course proved to be a huge uphill learning curve that tested me in many ways, as well as giving me a chance to see just how much there is that I do not know. Nevertheless, by the end of it I was feeling confident in navigating my way around a Rails app, writing code in both Ruby and JavaScript, and contributing significantly to team projects which covered very technical areas and built scalable web apps that genuinely work. Since completing the course, I have begun my own creative projects in order to solidify some of the skills learned, and continue my learning in web development while I look for employment in this area.
