Profile bio

About Rob Sheldon

I'm currently a contract senior developer and technical lead. I've been building software that keeps organizations running lean since 1997. Now focusing on building great infrastructure and great development teams. While strongest in PHP, MySQL, Javascript (ES6), Bash, and Linux, I have also built or maintained software in C, C++, Pascal, COBOL, WFL, Perl, Remedy, PL/SQL, and oh heck, also 68040 assembly, Applescript, VBScript, Hypertalk, etc.Linux-related skills include Apache, nginx, LXC, defensive security, and systems administration generally. I've been daily-driving KDE on Debian for over a decade and I've been providing hosted services for almost 20 years, with no OS-level breaches yet. I have a particular interest in password and credential management as these continue to be the most fruitful attack vector against infrastructure.Other engineering interests include data science (with a focus on spam and abuse prediction and prevention), search technology, and API development (client and server).Outside of nuts-and-bolts software and infrastructure development:• I have training from state and national organizations (and real-world experience) in emergency response and incident management (ICS). I enjoy using what I've learned there to help development teams communicate and operate more effectively.• I've done a solid amount of GIS work and technical support for incident response in wilderness settings. I'm most experienced with CalTopo, but have also used Avenza and other similar applications.• My incident response background also includes lost person behavior (with an emphasis on historical data), visual human tracking (for which I am a team instructor), wilderness navigation, radio protocols, and operational safety.• When not doing any of the above, I prefer to spend time in new wilderness settings, peak bagging, and dabbling a bit with nature photography. I'm formerly a climbing instructor and indoor climbing gym manager.• If I can't do that, I'm also a sucker for competitive trivia and Go (the board game).
