ResearcherOuting Medway'S Past Jun 2020 - PresentRochester, England, United KingdomOuting Medway's Past is a new project looking at the Queer Histories of the Medway Towns. Chatham in particular has a fascinating and largely hidden LGBTQIA+ History and this project will uncover those stories to create an archive oral and written history. The project is broadly in three parts;- Examining the past to look at the lives of LGBTQIA+ people and the influence they had on the development of the Medway Towns, including the nationally known figures that visited or are celebrated here - the likes of Edward II, James I, Queen Anne, Pepys and Lord Kitchener, people whose sexuality would be framed within the LGBTQIA+ acronym today.- Uncovering the history within living memory, speaking to the older members of the community for their first-hand testimony of World War II, the immediate post ware years, 1967 and the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality, the devastation of the AIDS pandemic and increasing homophobia in the 1980s, the injustices of Clause 28 in 1988 until its repeal in 2003 (but still causing its shadow over education and trans rights today). This will also look at the influence of the Royal Dockyard at Chatham on the area and the effects of its closure in 1984.- Looking to the present, the creation of Medway Pride, the wider acceptance of difference in sexuality into mainstream culture, but also the substantial issues that still exist with trans rights and the misinformation that creates transphobia. You can follow the project at www.outingmedwayspast.co.uk or contact me on rob@outingmedwayspast.co.uk if you'd like to contribute or know more.
