About Rob Gray
I have been on a (now 25+ year!) journey to understand perceptual-motor control in sports and other high-performance domains and apply that knowledge to help: (i) athletes acquire skills faster and reduce performance issues associated with things like pressure and injury recovery, (ii) coaches design more effective practices and pull out key metrics from data, and (iii) tech companies develop training products that incorporate good motor learning principles and lead to transfer to competition. I know how difficult it can be to get access to, read, and pull out actionable pieces of information from research studies and journal articles. That is one of the main reasons I started the Perception & Action Podcast in 2015 – to help bridge the gap between theory and the field. With over 300 episodes and 1 million downloads, I feel that it has become a critical resource for individuals working in areas including coaching, talent development, training and rehabilitation. As a speaker I have extensive experience with integrating and analyzing research, pulling out relevant, sport-specific findings and generating practical takeaways. As a consultant and coach educator (for teams and athletes at a range of different levels from amateur to professional) I help to connect the incredible experiential knowledge of coaches/instructors with the theoretical frameworks in skill acquisition and motor learning. My goal is to take you from following recipes to becoming a chef! By understanding why certain types of practice design work from a theoretical viewpoint I am confident it will allow you to develop your own new and innovative practice activities. As a researcher I have gained experience working with many different types of performance tools and biometric recording devices including eye tracking, motion tracking, EMG, and force plates. One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is the baseball batting virtual environment/virtual reality that I developed on my own over the course of many years and which has been used in over 25 published studies. In 2017 (Gray, Frontiers in Psychology) I published the results of a 10-year study using a virtual reality training protocol I developed which lead to clear evidence of transfer of training to real performance.
