While at Caterpillar, I held a number of positions in engine development including engine component structural testing, lube system and filtration testing and refinement, diesel and natural gas combustion and performance development. From 1988 until my retirement in 2013, I was Caterpillar's corporate emissions measurement specialist, with focus on lab and field particulate matter sampling and measurement methods. I served on the ISO TC70 SC8 subcommittee charged with writing what became the first version of ISO8178-1-8, the international standard for steady-state cycle emissions measurement, from 1989-1994, and later served as an industry advisor during development of ISO 16183 which is the international standard for transient cycle emissions measurement. I served on a number of US heavy duty diesel engine industry committees through the Truck and Bus Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) and Coordinating Research Council (CRC), with emphasis on engine and vehicle emissions measurement research and regulation. Some of the projects are now familiar to those in the emissions testing world, including CRC projects E-53/55, E-66, E-43 and ACES, and EPA regulations 40 CFR 1065, 40 CFR 86, 40 CFR 89 and 40 CFR 92. I am probably best known for inventing partial flow dilution particulate sampling system technologies, most recently embodied by the Sierra BG3 transient partial flow dilution and particulate sampling system. I was heavily involved between 2005 and 2010 in an initiative to permit partial flow dilution systems as an alternative to full dilution systems for certification of particulate matter levels for diesel engines tested on transient cycles. On Jan 7, 2011, this allowance became official within 40CFR Part 1065...a good day!I am now semi-retired with an emissions measurement consultant business. Some days, I am more retired than others.
