About Rob Harvey
I am an experienced post-graduate research scientist studying the regulation of post-transcriptional gene expression in response to cellular stress and toxic insults. In particular, I have a keen interested in how cancerous and non-cancerous cells respond and adapt to chemotherapeutic compounds.

Postdoctoral Scientist
Identified a novel chemical toxicophore, present in many chemotherapeutics, that inhibited mitochondria function (Stephenson et al, 2020, eLIFE). We characterised the mechanism of toxicity, which will aid future safe drug design. Importantly, we described a novel therapeutic strategy as these compounds selectivity target cancers that are more dependent on aerobic respiration. Engaged in research collaborations to develop novel techniques studying cellular RNA binding proteins (Queiroz et al, 2019, Nature Biotechnology) and also investigated the role of RNA binding proteins during the UV cellular stress response (Stoneley et al, 2022, Molecular Cell).I was the laboratory supervisor of PhD students, including training laboratory technique, mentoring, analysing/interpreting data and planning future direction of projects.
Phd Student
I characterised a novel cellular signalling pathway whereby mTOR inhibition activated the integrated stress response (ISR) after DNA damage, which promoted cancer cell migration. I identified an antagonistic compound targeting ISR signalling that preventented cancer cell migration, highlighting a therapeutic avenue to reduce metastasis (Harvey et al, 2019, Science Signaling).
Research Assistant
Characterisation of the interaction between Spt5 and the transcription factor Pleiohomeotic in Drosophila (Harvey et al, 2013, Plos One).
