One of the biggest challenges a safety person must overcome is the stigma of the safety professional. Our history has not bode us well, in the eyes of the workforce, and only recently has the culture of the management begun to appreciate the impact we have on their bottom line. As a former trades-person and technician, I understand that relating to management, and the workforce, requires two different approaches. To begin with, they don't speak the same language when it comes to safety, and two, the perception of the safety person's involvement in their day to day tasks is somewhat skewed. As a former technician, I can relate to the workforce to get them to see the impact to safety on the job, as it impacts their world in every aspect of their lives. Once you get the buy in from them, they will follow the rules and practices set forth by the management. As for management, their impact of safety has two fronts. There are the financial influences and the morality/ethical issues, which are subjective, according to the individual. By speaking both languages, I can adopt the most effective means of communication to the person(s) of concern and get the message to hit home. Effective safety is safety that is practiced, and not just spoken.
