About Rob Laflin
Having studied Biomedical Engineering and acquiring a MEng at the University of Sheffield, I have dedicated my career to the constantly evolving and rewarding field of MedTech. Starting in NHS as a Clinical Engineer, I had the opportunity to work directly with patients – cutting my teeth with Gait Analysis, Ophthalmology and Audiology clinics and the R&D process for developing the complex and niche devices used for clinical diagnostics. During this time, I achieved by MSC in Clinical Engineering at Kings College London. From this I moved over to the industry, specifically the field of Orthopaedics with a role at Depuy Synthes (part of Johnson and Johnson). Here I refined my technical skills working in the Biomechanics testing lab working on data acquisition and signal processing, building a system to acquire, process and report data in real time in the field. My work then transferred to the in-house verification testing of Attune Revision Intuition surgical instruments and the successful launch of the system. This led me to a role within the R&D team, working as a Development Engineer on the international Emphasys Acetabular Hip project, leading on the design and development of a several instruments used by surgeons for implant installation. Subsequent projects involved leading a workstream on the Sigma Intuition partial knee implant surgical instruments and developing the kitting solution for the entire 100+ instrument kit. All of which involved producing and coordinating everything required for DHF for 510K and MDR submissions including risk assessments, biocompatibility/sterilisation and detailed design (GD&T etc.) Having worked closely with the Velys Robotic-Assisted solution development team on the transfer of implant installs from manual to robotically assisted, I wanted to be more involved in this growing field of robotics and the future for healthcare. This occurred with a move to CMR Surgical and a role as a Senior Clinical Development Engineer. Here I was able to become the link between surgeons, surgery and the Technology division developing the latest instruments and constantly improving the Versius Robotic System to meet the ever-expanding needs and requirements of modern surgery.
