I am currently Professor of Anthropology, Director of the CRM-Archaeology Graduate Program, Director of the Archaeology Laboratory, and Director of the Douglas A. Birk Collection at St. Cloud State University. I hold a Ph. D. in Anthropology from Binghamton University (SUNY). I am an anthropological archaeologist with interests in historical archaeology, ethnohistory, and the North American fur trade. My research centers on the processes of colonialism and ethnogenesis. In the Great Lakes, my research has focused on the role of tobacco pipes and smoking in the daily lives of the Native and European participants in the fur trade. This research is published in a volume, Smoking and Culture: The Archaeology of Tobacco Pipes in Eastern North America (University of Tennessee Press, 2004), which I co-edited and in an edited volume, Archaeological Perspectives on the French in the New World, (University Press of Florida, 2017). I have published numerous articles in journals such as Archéologiques, Ethnohistory, Historical Archaeology, International Journal for Historical Archaeology, Louisiana Archaeology, and Southeastern Archaeology. I am also a public archaeologist with interests in indigenous archaeology and cultural resource management (CRM). Since coming to SCSU in 2013, I have developed research interests in the missionization of Native peoples in Minnesota and the civilian and military fortifications erected across central Minnesota during the Dakota - U.S. War of 1862.
