Senior Security EngineerDept Of Energy Dec 2012 - Aug 2024As a Senior Subject Matter Expert, Mr. Millott provides senior level engineering support to the Cyber Security Operations Center (CySOC) for the Department of Energy (DoE). This support includes architecture review of current networks, detecting system weaknesses and researching and implementing corrective enhancements. These enhancements have included installing and maintaining 11 Palo Alto Next Generation Security Firewalls across 3 separate, air-gapped networks, FireEye Network based Adaptive Defense system, Hawkeye G Active Defense Grid, SentryWire packet capture tool, Wireless Intrusion Detection Systems (WIDS), Snort Network Intrusion Detection System and a Security Orchestrator to automate the organizations defenses including data enrichment of alerts, and automated reaction to potential attacks. In addition to installing the above security devices, accurate monitoring of all systems is vital. Mr. Millott installed, configured and maintains a Solarwinds system to continuously monitor, alert and track over 6000 nodes to include desktops, servers and networking equipment. This monitoring and alerting has prevented innumerable outages by detecting potential issues and taking corrective action before they become critical and cause network outage.Maintaining these systems and teaching junior personnel how to handle alerts, as well as writing up the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) ensures the Departments networks are protected from Nation state actors. Other tasks include penetration testing various networks, as well as working with system designers to ensure new systems are securely designed and deployed.

Tasking includes, conducting system analysis utilizing various tools such as Kali, Backtrack, HEAT, GFI, Nessus, NetCat, VMWare, L0phtCrack, John the Ripper, Newt, NMap, Web Inspect, Application Detective, Core Impact, Metasplolit, etc. Techniques for the exploitation of Web Applications and SQL servers, including Cross Site Scripting (XSS) and SQL injection attacks are commonly employed, and occasional Reverse Engineering for attack development is also utilized. Analysis of the results gathered from the various tools in respect to Best Security Practices, DCID 6/3, Agency requirements, and other Governmental requirements leads to recommendations as to how to mitigate identified vulnerabilities. Finally, follow-up system analysis is conducted, which includes conducting penetration testing of any residual vulnerabilities.Mr. Millott has also developed maintained an SQL database for use throughout the organizations. This database is designed to simplify and standardize the report writing tasks for the entire division. Various test results are imported into the database, and a standard report is prepared as output to be delivered to the client. This database has saved on average 1-3 business days of report writing time, allowing the final reports to be delivered to the clients sooner. In the area of Network infrastructure design and implementation, Mr. Millott has designed and implemented a secure network environment for an office staff of 30. He designed a comprehensive network architecture based on Cisco routers, switches and Pix firewalls to include 2 separate lab networks, office network, and DMZ. Implemented multiple VLANs to isolate traffic, Pix firewall rule sets designed following Network Best Practices and seamlessly migrated all users to new network while minimizing down time. -
