With a PhD in Performance Studies, and specialising in devised Visual Theatre, I am a prolific theatre-maker and educator in South Africa with an established national and growing international profile. I have been Artistic Director of the Amsterdam Fringe Festival (2016) and Guest Artistic Director of the Cape Town Fringe Festival (2016). I am currently a senior lecturer in the School of Postgraduate Studies at AFDA Johannesburg. I am also a Co-Artistic Director and founder of the open-door collective, A Conspiracy of Clowns, and was Artistic Director and co-founder of South Africa’s premier Deaf and hearing Visual Theatre company, From The Hip: Khulumakahle (FTH:K), 2005-2011. In 2010, I was one of 25 international candidates nominated for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative and was mentored by theatre luminary Lara Foot. I have facilitated official and informal training programmes at Rhodes University, Community Arts Project (CAP), Arts and Media Access Centre (AMAC), CityVarsity Cape Town, AFDA Cape Town, University of Cape Town, New Africa Theatre Association (NATA), and the Uyabona Ke Project in Grahamstown. I have racked up a number of original, innovative, physical and visual creations such as the smash hit "Crazy in Love" (2013 Standard Bank Ovation Award winner and 2014 Amsterdam Fringe Festival Best International Production) with Andrew Buckland and Liezl de Kock, directed the Silver Standard Bank Ovation winner, "Piet se Optelgoed" created by Liezl de Kock, "Waterline", 2015 Standard Bank Ovation winner with Uyabona Ke, "Pictures of You" (the top-selling theatre production on the Fringe 2009, winner of 2 Fleur du Cap 2009 Theatre Awards, and winner of a 2010 Standard Bank Ovation Award), "Benchmarks" (on the 2011 National Arts Festival Main programme and 2011 Handspring Puppet Award Winner), "Womb Tide" (nominated for a slew of Fleur du Cap and Naledi Awards) and "QUACK!" (nominated for 2010 Handspring Best Visual Theatre Production). "Phitlho: The Hidden" won a Standard Bank Ovation Award for Best Ensemble in 2019, and "Whistleblowers" that I directed won a Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award in 2022. "Whistleblowers" toured to the Netherlands in 2023 and is about to return to perform at De Parade Festival in 2024.
