The ability of how you relate with yourself and others, determines whether a team and its members perform in the top 25%, middle, or bottom 25% percentile. In my professional experience, a deciding factor on team performance is the compatibility of the team vision with the personal visions of each of its members. If a member doesn't have a personal vision, they will lack the emotional drive and will just want to get by. If the team vision is not inspiring enough, the work and energy output of your team members will reflect this. If the personal vision of the employee doesn't match with the team vision or its corresponding members, it will create conflict, stress, and underperformance. Vision is determined by the capacity of an individual's self-connection and emotional intelligence. The second deciding factor is emotional intelligence. Before you can lead others and influence culture, you need to lead yourself. A third deciding factor on team performance is the team leader's coaching ability. If they don't know how to: foster trust, listen and attune to the needs of their members, empower and inspire vision, navigate difficult conversations, hold accountability, manage their and others emotional reactions and stress, balance between psychological safety and accountability, and balance between friendship and leadership to name a few, then the team leader will create a culture that will underperform.
