I call myself a freelance writer, but what does that mean? On one level, a freelance writer is an independent contractor. As a contractor and not an employee, I can save your business a lot of money because you don't have to pay my benefits, give me sick leave or pay for my vacations. On a deeper level, a freelance writer is like an actor. One day I'm wearing work boots and a blue-collared shirt, telling your readers how to maintain a forklift. The next day, I'm a holistic health practitioner, extolling the virtues of natural medicines. At other times, I've played the part of a lawyer, an insurance salesperson, a coffee merchant, a world traveller, an environmentalist, and many more. Freelance writing is more than writing grammatically correct sentences. Ultimately, it's about connecting with readers on a level they can relate to. That's what I love about my job. It enables me to connect with people I might not otherwise be able to connect with.
