As a counselor, my passion is to bring theory to practice and to break down the barrier of shame. I like to blend the literal with the figurative. This is why I chose the unconventional creation of a mobile consultation room, the 1967 Kombi Van called Esperanza ( a Spanish word for Hope). The presence of the Kombi, in a delightful way, immediately challenges and disrupts a client's perception of the counseling conversation. It either elicits fond memories and/or invites the creation of future possibilities. This kombi is literally a vehicle for transformation, as well as a fun ride. Prior to becoming a counselor, I worked for over ten years as a community mental health support worker with clients experiencing severe and persistent psychotic disorders. In this role, I spent many hours side by side with my clients and experienced the power of "car therapy" as I drove them to appointments or to visit outdoor natural spaces. I embrace Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) as my preferred model of practice. It totally respects the client as the expert in their life honours their strengths, resources, and capacities, and inspires hope. Hence the name Esperanza. It also invites the person to move forward, from an experience of being stuck, into positive action. And, SFT is fast, effective, and enduring because it reminds people that they are already capable, have strengths and resources and so this renewed awareness empowers them to solve any future problem that may cause distress. I also like to harness the restorative power of nature as much as possible and so where possible I invite people to join me and sit, walk, and talk in parks, nature reserves, or waterfronts. My hope is that people see counseling as the first resort and not the last resort when faced with the challenges of life.
