The Engineering Department provides an independent engineering delivery and governance function for the whole of NPL, supporting a science community of over 1000 scientists working in 420 laboratories and other remote sites. Some key aspects of my role include;o The creation of a centralised engineering function for NPL.o The design and implementation of a business wide Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system, Dassault’s 3DX, and the complete redesign of the company wide engineering policy and procedures for engineering delivery and quality.o Leading an organisation wide transformation programme to improve the quality and competency of the engineering delivery across NPL, with a focus on skills and development of an engineering career pathway alongside a competency framework.o Manage the delivery and output of the engineering team from its manufacturing capabilities, design office and other specialised areas such as systems & software engineering, project management and safety & quality engineering.o Commercial exploitation of NPLs intellectual property, ranging from direct commercial contracts through to technology transfer and support to spin out companies.o Support the delivery of NPLs diverse project and programme portfolio as well as providing an independent assurance and quality function across the business.

The Earth Observation, Climate and Optical (ECO) group plays a leading role in international activities to improve the quality and reliability of Earth observation data and developing new measurement techniques and instrumentation to reduce the associated measurement uncertainties. The groups expertise ensures that our customers can have complete confidence in the data they collect through Earth observation.A primary aim of the group is the maintenance of the candela, the SI base unit for luminous intensity. The groups optical work also extends beyond Earth observation and the candela, enabling new product development, quality assurance, health and safety, and compliance in applications as diverse as transport, pharmaceuticals, medical imaging and fashion.A key ambition is the launch of a disruptive small satellite called 'TRUTHS' to extend our capabilities directly into space. Group Leader (Tritium Engineering And Science Group) And Jet Engineer In Charge

The Tritium Engineering and Science Group (TESG) comprises of 45 staff and 10 visiting students and is responsible for the operation, maintenance and upgrade of the Active Gas Handling System (AGHS) at the Joint European Torus (JET) as well as involvement in UK and European R&D activities. My main responsibility is to lead the group and all activities within the AGHS to meet the requirements of the JET programme and to ensure effective, efficient, reliable, and safe operation of the AGHS facility. Whilst mainly contributing to the UKAEAs fusion work I am also involved in the fission field, for example, in 2014 I was invited to give evidence at a public hearing in Japan on the Fukushima Daiichi NPS.As the TESG Group Leader I was also responsible for the Tritium Accountancy for the JET site and the submission of accountancy reports to the HSE and Euratom.

The Nuclear Safety Group is responsible for the oversight of nuclear safety issues at the station. I was involved in the maintenance and development of the stations safety case and demonstration of compliance with the case. I was also involved with various aspects of plant performance, primarily the monitoring and detection of in core fuel failures. In addition to the main aspects of my role I acted as the groups operational experience coordinator and monitored and collated the groups key performance indicators.

I provided technical support to the Japanese salesmen and service engineers in the areas of superconducting magnets, cryogenics, spectroscopy and associated ancillary systems such as electronics and subcomponent design. I was responsible for the co-ordination and specification of custom projects between the customer, our offices in Japan and the factory in the UK. Although based in Tokyo I also supported our offices in Osaka and Tsukuba and travelled extensively to customer sites throughout Japan. I advised sales staff and customers on custom systems and our standard project range and controlled the co-ordination of specifications and technical information between the UK and Japan.
