I was the leader of Arup Advanced Technology and Research group of around 30 people that specialize in high end numerical analysis (seismic, blast, soil-structure interaction, computational fluid dynamics), cutting edge structural engineering and the associated risk and hazard assessments. The global AT&R team within Arup is often involved in many of Arup's cutting edge and high profile technical projects that Arup has created over the years. I was responsible for overall team performance, financial and technical and personally performed most tasks to varying degrees - business development, proposal writing, technical reviews, project delivery, staff development, recruitment, financial oversight , project management, technical innovation. Working in Arup San Francisco, Advanced Technology and Research Team. I was one of the three senior leaders of the team with a focus on project delivery and providing specialist engineering to challenging projects. I moved to California in 2010 with my family initially to work as a structural engineer on the California High Speed Rail Project. I ran a small team of engineers looking at different route alignments for one section of the proposed route. Using my knowledge of seismic engineering, structural dynamics (looking at train vibrations), I focused on particular challenges including tall viaducts, crossing seismic faults, and the entrance to Los Angeles Union Station.

This period was boom time for high rise design and construction around the world. During this time I became particularly focused on the design of tall buildings in areas of high winds and earthquakes. I was co-developer of the patented damped outrigger scheme for tall buildings and provided specialist engineering advice to a number of projects within Arup. Projects included St Francis Towers (Manila), BBVA tower (Mexico), Nile Corniche (Egypt)

I spent a year living and working on a construction site, including some time overseeing construction of work that I had designed. This immersive experience allowed me to see a large variety of construction types including foundations, steel frames, concrete walls, jetty structures, underground tanks, machinery foundations, outfall channels etc. The knowledge I gained here was invaluable as I learned how to design things to be built!.
