Before I retired I consulted on disruptive noise in the workplace which causes distraction and makes concentration difficult!Privacy and confidentiality is essential in some working environments and is lacking in most! Most evaluations of a working environment focus on quantity, or volume of sound. The notion that a good acoustic environment is achieved when sound levels are as low as possible is wrong!Just as with ergonomic factors such as light, temperature and humidity, there is a comfort zone for the volume of sound and it is NOT ZERO!Virtually every organisation has issues with high levels of sound causing disturbance or alternatively issues with speech privacy.A well balanced acoustic environment will benefit any business by reducing mistakes due to reduced disturbance, greater speech clarity and understanding in call centre environments, greater security between meeting / counselling rooms and offices, leading to improved productivity and enhanced well-being of the workforce, resulting in a reduction in stress levels and greater staff retention.Managing the acoustic environment in your business whether it is an office, retail shop, café, restaurant or engineering workshop will deliver benefits for all.It is easier than you think and you don’t need to re-model the interior! We analyse sound levels in the workplace and the time it takes to dissipate (reverberation time) plus the noise blocking effectiveness of walls and partitions (attenuation) and using this information we compare our findings to what they should be for the type of work being undertaken. Results from these tests enable us to scientifically calculate and prescribe a solution that will ensure that the acoustic environment supports the functionality of the business. All proposals are backed up by evidence based on:PHYSICS, APPLIED MATHEMATICS AND COMMON SENSE Plus 30+ years experience in the effective use of space in office and retail environments.
